Cobra 75WXST; 4' firestik. I don't like it, it's too heavy, though it's nicely hidden and i just use bungee cords to hold the transmitter nearby.

I don't have a c.b. yet, but it'll probably be a Galaxy 929 that's tuned up. The antenna will be a firestik. This is a good radio shop-http://www.claysradioshop.com You can get that Cobra WXST there with a tune-up on it.

Regardless of wether anything was tuned or not at the factory, you have to tune your entire set up on YOUR vehicle after installation to actually be tuned. A bench tuning in the factory really doesn't do much good.

Right now I'm using a Cobra handheld with a 4' Firestik. I'm still undecided on what I will get as a permanent solution.

After looking at the site, I think Edwin means that the tune-up will increase the capability of the CB beyond the manufacturer's specs.

Big radio for a KJ, no? I still have a President "JFK" that's way too big for my KJ. When I put in one of my trucks, I was able to chat with Martains.

That's exactly what I did. I use a mag mount Wilson Trucker 5000 (steel whip) when I plan trips, otherwise I don't leave that s.u.c.k.e.r. atop my roof. I'm contemplating a perment (whip) mount in the rear somewhere.

KJTX hit the nail on the head. If you get a radio tuned up you will increase the range of the radio. When you (Hoss) say tune it up on the Jeep, are you talking about setting the SWRs?

Peak and Tweak? Making it output more power than originally specified is questionable at best :D

4 watts is the legal limit for Citizens Band radio. The Cobra 75WXST already makes 4W, as do 90% of CBs available. If your radio has been modified to make more power or you are running an external linear amp, you're not only breaking the law, you're likely annoying other people as your voice will bleed over to other channels and you could potentially damage radios of people ner you.

Please do the intelligent and mature thing. If you really need more range then get a radio operators license and a 2m ham rig.

I'm not tweaking mine, btw :D (you quoted my message so just wanted to clarify).

Questionable? Intelligent & mature? I believe that's nonsense but I'll ask the CB shop guy next time I'm out there. If that were the case, I would have vaporized every CB within 15 miles of me. No one ever complained about my output and I've never heard anyone complain about other's. Just about every independent trucker on the big road has major putput. Sounds to me like you were one of those guys I could step on from 5 miles away. Irk'd you cause you couldn't get a word in, right? That wasn't a question.

If anyone gets a basic tune-up on a CB, you will appreciate it. Especially if your in trouble and miles away from anywhere.

I see some talk about "oh the four watts applies to the talk key pushed without talking" ... well, that seems nonsensical. Why in the heck would you care about the wattage output of the radio when it's "transmitting silience"?
That sounds to me like being overly technical and looking for a loophole. If there's a limit, the limit would apply to the maximum output power.

OK that is a legitimate concern.

Its a baseline test where the meter will stay still enough to read a consistant number.........BTW the Cobra 29 Classic I have in my route truck was "peaked and tuned" and is putting out a shade under 50w :D .

I myself am kinda wondering about the "firestick" fascination....... there are better fibergalss antennas out there, Francis being one they availble in a number of lengths up to 6'( use a 5' on my truck), they have a nice clear sound and can take abuse.
If you want steel I;ve great luck with Wilson antennas, now the are somewhat expensive and heavy but they rank just above Francis in sound quailty IMO. I also have a Wilson 2000 laying around the house somewhere ,its just to short for the truck I'm in now :D .

I'm in the market for a CB for the KJ myself and am trying to decide between Galaxy,Connex and Ranger........ hmm :D

Great radio's but man are they ever big for the KJ interior. That's why my President is sitting on a shelf. I went with the Cobra 75WXST for the KJ.

If I were in trouble I would want more range on a c.b., not to blow anyone off the air. And, no one said anything about an amp. Amps are for talking to other states. And I think FreedomKJ is talking about 4 watts dead key.

Freedom was simply referring to amps.

I'm not just reffering to amps, I'm refering to standalone radios as well.

According to "Clay's" website their tuning service includes "Turning up the Transmitter's wattage" and "Cutting the transmit limiter and/or adjusting the modulation." Both are illegal in the US.

Here's the word straight from the FCC (from 47 CFR 95):

Radio Modification:
Quote:
Sec. 95.425 (CB Rule 25) May I make any changes to my CB station
transmitter?

(a) You must not make or have any one else make any internal modification to your CB transmitter.
(b) Internal modification does not include:
(1) Repair or servicing of a CB station transmitter (see CB Rule 24, Sec. 95.424); or
(2) Changing plug-in modules which were certificated as part of your CB transmitter.
(c) You must not operate a CB transmitter which has been modified by anyone in any way, including modification to operate on unauthorized frequencies or with illegal power. (See CB Rules 9 and 11, Sec. Sec. 95.409 and 95.411.)

Amplifiers:
Quote:
Sec. 95.411 (CB Rule 11) May I use power amplifiers?

(a) You may not attach the following items (power amplifiers) to your certificated CB transmitter in any way:
(1) External radio frequency (RF) power amplifiers (sometimes called linears or linear amplifiers); or
(2) Any other devices which, when used with a radio transmitter as a signal source, are capable of amplifying the signal.
(b) There are no exceptions to this rule and use of a power amplifier voids your authority to operate the station.

Power Output:
Quote:
Sec. 95.410 (CB Rule 10) How much power may I use?

(a) Your CB station transmitter power output must not exceed the following values under any conditions:

AM (A3)--4 watts (carrier power) SSB--12 watts (peak envelope power)

(b) If you need more information about the power rule, see the technical rules in subpart E of part 95.
(c) Use of a transmitter which has carrier or peak envelope power in excess of that authorized voids your authority to operate the station.

Penalties:
Quote:
Sec. 95.421 (CB Rule 21) What are the penalties for violating these rules?

(a) If the FCC finds that you have willfully or repeatedly violated the Communications Act or the FCC Rules, you may have to pay as much as $10,000 for each violation, up to a total of $75,000. (See section 503(b) of the Communications Act.)
(b) If the FCC finds that you have violated any section of the Communications Act or the FCC Rules, you may be ordered to stop whatever action caused the violation. (See section 312(b) of the Communications Act.)
(c) If a Federal court finds that you have willfully and knowingly violated any FCC Rule, you may be fined up to $500 for each day you committed the violation. (See section 502 of the Communications Act.)
(d) If a Federal court finds that you have willfully and knowingly violated any provision of the Communications Act, you may be fined up to $10,000 or you may be imprisoned for one year, or both. (See section 501 of the Communications Act.)
