RB1 whats it like

i might be able to get my hands on one at a reasonable price

feedback would be apreciated, dont wory about the gps part , i have a garmin for that

i just put one in about 6 months ago and love it. navi works great and the ipod integration kit work flawlessly 95% of the time. Fouors if you already have navi why are you considering this unit?? the unit dose not play DVD and will not play a MP3 disk. your better bet would be to get an after market deck with all the bells and save the $$$

I was thinking of adding the RB1 as well; but was worrying about it working with the Mopar iPod kit...seems this is a non issue. Anybody know where to get a reasonably priced RB1? I found them for around $1400 but I thought I remember seeing them for around $800 at one point?

It works ok. The map CD is a bit dated. There have been a few occasions where it hasn't been able to navigate because of new roads. It won't allow you to enter a destination while the vehicle is in motion. That's a PITA having to stop to put in an address. Don't forget it runs on a CD, so you can't listen to a CD while you are using the NAV.

Personally, for the price you'd be money ahead to get an aftermarket unit.

I thought about that option but changed my mind when I saw the pioneer avic-n4. (now they have N5). It's a single din radio, dvd player with nav, retractable 7" screen with a remote brain the same size as the radio. I purchased it on ebay with the blue tooth kit for about 900$. Added a backup camera for 20$ and my ipod with just a standard cable. That unit is great. The sound processing is pretty good and it is quite easy to use. The big factor compare to the RB1 is the size of the nav screen. The screen is really small on the rb1. Also, pioneer got a data bus which is allowing you to add just about any accessory of your choosing. I really like alpine also since for sound quality they're usually one step ahead of pioneer but with them, everything is sold separately (the radio was sold separately from the nav unit, about 800$ ea). Since I'm getting older and do not plan on installing big amps and subs, I went for the best gizmo for the bucks. I really like the backup cam also, it's a great add-on. (mind you, it didn't stop my wife from backing up into somebody...!*%^ no damage to the libby hitch, 3000$ damage to the other car). Also, if you go with the aftermarket option, don't forget to buy a mating connector to your oem radio harness, makes all the installation so much easier. Good luck.

I had the RB1 for quite a while and while I generally liked the unit there were a few things that got on my nerves. One is that you must be nearly stopped (less than 5 mph) to input a destination. This means that your copilot cannot help you by entering in a destination while you're driving. Next, the device does not have a touch screen. The knob to select letters and options is OK, but touch screen would have been faster.

Others have also mentioned the DVD required for navigation, but it should be noted as well that unless you have a CD changer you won't be listening to any CD's since the navigation DVD must be in the unit for navigation to function. That brings me to my last point which is that the navigation DVD's tend to go bad over time even if you do not remove them from the unit. They must be more sensitive to the temperature changes of the vehicle in the summer and winter than normal media because I had to purchase two new disks during the 3 years I owned the RB1. Each disk will set you back between $150 and $200 (at least they did at the time I had the RB1). The new disk may contain updated maps, but for the cost of the disk you could get a fairly nice stand-alone GPS unit.

Like I said previously, even with all the shortcomings I've mentioned I still enjoyed the unit while I had it. It provided a clean factory look, didn't require any rewiring, and could be controlled by the steering wheel controls on the KJ. Hopefully this info helps.
