Here is a follow-up response from Bill at Jeepwarehouse. I was asking about 2WD liberties for a friend and he also updated me on the diesel:

Liberty Diesels are no longer available.
The 2007 Code guide I have does not show any diesel available next year. This has been rumored for a while. The 2.8L will be revised to be Blue Tech compatible and probably back for 2008.

Have your friend submit a 4X4 Liberty and I will convert it to a 2 WD. I stopped posting 2 WD models about 2 years ago. I only sell a couple a year and it just wasn't worth the hassle. Most of the options are the same with the exception of some obvious things like the Off Road Group. The "B" package is all that is still available.
I expect that all models will be closed in the next week or so.

Based on what I have learned here I am glad that I got an '05. When bluetec comes in, god knows what it will cost, how reliable it will be, and, in fact, if the EPA will even let it be used. My "old tech" '05 can handle the crappy fuel it gets now, biodiesel, or ulsd. For me, the '05 was/is the best solution. That's my take anyway.

Doesn't sound like anything's over. One model year missing is closer. From what I've read of BlueTec, it can be either catalyst NoX and PM scrubbers only, or if the cost of the precious metals is too high for the price range vehicle, SCR with urea injection and PM filter. If Bill's information is correct, it's the same R428 engine we have with some downstream exhaust scrubbers added on. Still like having an 05 without the requirement to use USLD only.

Yup the current CRD only needs the particulate traps & urea to be same basic tech as Blutec, the only real difference would be the cast iron block in the CRD.

Has anyone gotten any new information pertaining to the lack of a diesel option for 07. I was at the dealership today and they still swear its gonna be available. In fact when we picked up our 06 CRD in Indiana just recently they said the same thing. Are they really that clueless? Or do they know something we dont?

Maybe they understand that all '07 diesels have to have by law ULSD and that will not be nationwide available till about the 15th of Oct this year, so they can't be sold or delivered till after that date. You will see a diesel in the Dakota and probably the MB Bluetec V6 first in the MB clone Durango, later offerings will be in LX cars and 1/2 ton truck.

Most dealerships don't know nuthin' about nuthin' ;) 99% of the time they are very sceptical about whats to come and usually don't divuldge anything they may have a slight tidbit on. Vagueness is a key quality of any salesperson when it comes to predicting the future, its a gamble to risk being wrong for someone who's sense of truth and honor has the stigma of always being questionable

I spent some time last night searching all over the Diamler Chrysler site, and found no reference to an end of the KJ CRD. In fact the press releases talking about the GC all state that it "joins the highly successful Liberty".
Anyhow, my thoughts are that we will see a 6 month lapse, but that we will see it back in the mid-year (Jan) timeframe. My logic here (ok, maybe it's logic) is that they can't release a 07 MY vehicle that does not meet 07 emissions requirements, and that the traps/catalysts required to support that simply can not survive the current high sulfer fuel. I think they are all caught in a EPA created catch 22, and the only way to deal with it is to pull back till January so that they can insure a supply of USLD in the market first.

My ramblings....

It would be great to see the CRD continue in the 07 model year. It would make it more attractive to the aftermarket product developers, and DC would be more motivated to support the 05 and 06 models. I wonder what total production for 05 and 06 wound up to be? 10 or 12 thousand?

The last number I saw was 11,333 for just 2005 alone. So total production thus far is probably over 20,000.

Noticed on CNN ticker at the bottom of the screen that DCX has announced that the KJ will no longer be avalable with a Diesel.

The last North American diesel-powered Liberty was built May 20 at Chrysler’s assembly plant in Toledo, OH, also the future site of Dodge Nitro production.

Jeep Liberty CRD goes away after '06.
Chrysler had projected sales of about 5,000 diesel-powered Libertys. To date, however, deliveries total more than 11,000.
“It definitely exceeded our expectations,” the spokeswoman says, adding the decision to end production of the Liberty CRD should not be misconstrued. “We are definitely committed to diesel technology.”
The move to end North American sales of the Liberty CRD comes hard on the heels of a similar decision by Volkswagen of America Inc.

However, Liberty CRD production for Europe, where it is called the Jeep Cherokee, will continue. And plans to build a European diesel version of the all-new Dodge Nitro SUV, which shares a platform with the Liberty and is expected in showrooms next year, also are unaffected.

I think we'll see more Libby CRDs, and other models as well. There is no legal reason a MY '07 couldn't be marketed with current tech. CRD. The first run MY 07 Dodge Cummins will be the current 5.9 that is not '07 emmission compatible. But Dodge will release a MY '07.5 with the new compliant 6.7 litre Cummins with all the emissions crap on it (closed CCV, EGR, VGR, Particuluate trap, etc). I think the temperary (I hope) lose of the CRD is a financial decsion by D/C related to meeting '07 emmsions. Personally, all this emission mess has me aggravated. I'm not sure I will ever want one of these new diesel. I bought an 06 Cummins specfically to avoid this new stuff. I mean the 07 Cummins will have 4 exhaust sensors and 2 intake sensors. Even an aftermarket air filter may set codes. These particulant traps are going to be a nightmare. The good side is that there are supposed to be a lot more diesels in a lot more vehicles coming down the pipe and I don't think the KJ CRD is dead (it may be a 3.0 though). I fear that the complicated nature of the newer engines will cause problems; problems that your average new-to-diesels-want-better-mileage (or biodiesel) crowd won't understand or tolerate. Us diesel heads might be willing to work around it and tolerate some issues, but not your average Joe/Jill. So, I wonder what's gonna happen long term to diesel passenger vehicles in the US. I really like my wife's 06 CRD. Glad we got it will the gettin was good.

Well, this is the Monday of news for the CRD, here are two more articles:

http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/060605/jeep_diesel.html?.v=2

http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/ar ... 50348/1148

The third article initially posted in an earlier post:

http://wardsdealer.com/latest/cherokee_diesel_liberty/

These clearly state that the CRD Liberty was the test case for the diesel Grand Cherokee and that it's not worth the investment to continue the Liberty CRD.

I love my CRD, now I just have to protect it from other drivers!
If I were rich, I'd go by me a Jeep Green one (I have one located near me). Love these little diesel Jeeps!

Having read the article I would like to say it sounds like BS, disinformation or someone who has no idea what he is writing about.

Quote:
Unlike the Grand Cherokee’s 3.0L CRD, however, Bluetec’s performance is contingent on the availability of low-sulfur diesel – which is scheduled to start flowing from U.S. refineries today (June 1).
I suppose they mean Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel. As if the GC doesn't require ULSD. All '07 diesels require ULSD.

Am I the only one who finds the following para's strange, they are talking about the same engine. They both have EGR's and the particulate traps that also requires ULSD. With urea injection they will pass '09 CARB if EPA ok's that part of the technology. The VM Motori has the same access to particlate traps and eurea injection and the same type of fuel injectors, it just has a heavier cast iron block. The thing that makes the MB engine special is it's aluminum block & heads and it may be a non rebuildable engine, unlike the the VM in the Liberty.

Quote:
Though built by Mercedes-Benz, the Grand Cherokee’s new 215-hp CRD will not feature the tri-star brand’s revolutionary Bluetec emissions-reducing technology, which is scheduled to debut this fall for the Mercedes E-Class car line.

The ’07 Mercedes-Benz E320 Bluetec features a 210-hp, 3.0L V-6 direct-injection turbodiesel engine that reduces carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by combining exhaust gas recirculation with components such as an oxidizing catalytic converter and a particulate filter.

About VW & CRD. VW is making the change from Pump Duse to CRD and decided to wait for '08 because of the ULSD fuel will not be nation wide till about first of the year in US because of the mixing of 500 ppm partial tanks with 15 ppm fill-up that will contaminate the 15 ppm fuel and may have fuel that is 200 ppm down to 30 ppm by second or third station storage refill. Same will happen for US Jeep only they will be '07 cars, unlike the VW's. Although I have heard the VW's will be '07.5 cars, but we won't know till they happen.

Quote:
The move to end North American sales of the Liberty CRD comes hard on the heels of a similar decision by Volkswagen of America Inc., which confirms it will drop several diesel cars next year.

Absent from VW’s ’07 lineup will be diesel versions of its Golf, Jetta and Beetle models, a spokesman says.
But VW will continue to offer its Touareg cross/utility vehicle with a 5.0L V-10 diesel, as well as a special-edition ’06 diesel Jetta, which will carry over into next year. Like the ’07 Grand Cherokee, availability will be limited to 45 states.

And in 2008, a new diesel-powered Jetta featuring a 2.0L 4-cyl. TDI will arrive in U.S. showrooms.
Yes the '08 TDI will be in the showrooms in US about 6 months late, with particulate traps. The V10 VW Touareg is still not available in US, probably from poor first year sales due to $55,000 and up price range and 19 mpg highway rating.
