On a properly done SVO setup this does not happen. But yes, polymerization in the oil is a real concern.
Off original topic, but how do you prevent it? Better metering to ensure ~100% combustion? How WOULD one avoid that in an electronic common-rail like the CRD?
The SVO needs to be heated, the hotter the better, its a pretty viscous fluid, so the closer the viscosity to #2 @ 72f the better. Generally you want to heat the fluid to AT LEAST 180F, 220F would be preferable, but its hard to get that much heat transfer to take place with even with a fully warmed up engine.
The fuel system needs to be completely purged prior to shutdown, with dyed diesel it is easy to know when the return fuel is no longer SVO, or is mostly not SVO. John Deere is developing a multi-use sensor, one function of which is a electric viscometer. Ideally a "smart" system would compare the incoming viscosity and the outgoing viscosity to verify that full switchover/purge had occured of the SVO at shutdown. Integrating this system into the calibration would also allow the ECU to dynamically change the current calibration file based off of running a mixture of fuels(such as during shutdown or startup of the SVO system).
Additionally there are certain load points where running SVO is problematic - no load conditions being one(either at idle or rated speed).
SVO does best under high load higher RPM than it does idle - having a system that can quickly and dynamically update the fuel mixture and calibration based on engine load and speed is preferred.
To date nothing on the market comes close to this ability, though elsbett does have a few refinements that help.
My opinion of elsbett systems is that while they may seem quality, if any part fails good luck getting support(from germany) and good luck getting a replacement. We had our high capacity elsbett SVO fuel pump fail, and were unable to obtain a warrantee replacement from them (this coming from a research use with little use and only on virgin SVO). Thing just upped and quit - died electrically. Nothing wrong with the geared part of the pump, but rather the motor elsbett picked to use with it.
Tried to price out the motor its self for a replacement, came to around $400-500 for just the motor from all the vendors we checked.
