WTF is this ORM? I know thats a dumb question but I can't decipher the technical babble between the f37 and tranny/tq issues. Please, somebody lay it down for me in 1 paragraph or less... I work a lot so I don't have time to read 8 different threads and I need an annotated version Any insight appreciated |

ORM is short for OFF ROAD MODIFICATION. The orm consists of unplugging the Mass Air Filter (MAF). The MAF is between the turbo and the air box. By disconnecting you disable the EGR. By turning off the EGR you improve your fuel milage and power greatly. Also you set off the check engine light (CEL) by disconnecting the MAF. It is called the ORM because it is not necessarily a legal modification unless you are driving offroad. I hope this helps. |

off road mod. unplug the EGR at the air box, get better drivability and mileage, little to no soot from recycled exhaust in the oil, intake system, etc.... I'm sure that your questions will be answered in the ORM thread. Keep in mind this will void warranty and might be against the law in your state. |

MAF would be the Mass Air Flow sensor. You unplug it and it shuts off the EGR and Opens up the EGR Flow Control Valve (FCV) The FCV still operates on shutdown to prevent "dieseling" or shudder on shutdown. Pretty slick. Thanks go to Chessmaster I believe. |

So how easy is it to "restore" for dealer visits? Does it register on the ECU? And, is it safe to do with a daily driver? |

To restore, plug it back in. Thee is some question about the EGR being non-functional after along time inactive (soot build-up). To clear the CEL, clear the code with a scantool. If you don't have a scantool, you can borow one for free at advanced auto parts or some other places. Or a cool neighbor. I believe the CEL also goes away after plugging MAF back in and 50 re-starts or a battery un-hook. Haven't done it. You don't HAVE to clear the code before you go to the dealer, but they may charge you $ to "figure out" why the CEL is on. |

Which scantools work on our CRDs? Any recommendations? |

I have an Innova 3100 OBDII scan tool and it will not communicate with my CRD. |

My CEL turned off after about 3-5 trips to the store. I plugged the MAF back in to see how long it would take to turn the light off or if I would notice the difference while driving. I thought it would turn off after 3 starts, so I sat in the driveway any started the engine 3 times and the light remained until I drove the thing around a few times. BTW, I think I can live with the CEL on, for the drive-ability really is noticeably better ( off road only ), try it both ways and you will see what I mean. |

here is my question... is the ORM the "rename" from the "kill the EGR" thread??? i was web-less for about a week and coulnd find the Kill the EGR or Deathe to the EGR (something like that) and at 48K my light turned on... code 402 and 407 right after the F37 being done... I just unpluged my MAF and wow... what a diff!!! i guess i should still get the egr fixxed right??? any thoughts? |

Same topic, different thread. Perhaps some legal issues cropped up. |

Have you had F31 complete yet? It's just for that but they also slip in anyother fixes they think we need |

At the time the price was hard to beat, I suspect it has troubles with CAN BUS vehicles, the code reader I have is 5 years old now, I really need to invest in a new one soon, Im thinking a USB interface for the laptop, though when I run paralells it tends not to like USB devices on XP so that may be out. And ya its chinese made crap......but I want to support the growing free market communist china.......wait.......they are communist? |

The non-CAN version of the Harbor Freight scanner doesn't work either. I tried that first because it was $40. Took it back and got my $40 back. An ELM 327 based cable I bought does work great for pulling and clearing codes with the right software (The best one is free). Some friends of mine who own a repair shop bought 2 of the latest high dollar aftermarket scanners available. Paid over $13,000 for both of them. Neither of them work on the CRD data streams, except for the same generic OBDII PID's that the ELM 327 does. Forgot the names of the scanners, but I could dig them up is someone is really interested. Anyway, at this time, it appears that only the Chrysler StarScan can do all the available data streams/sensor on the CRD, and contrary to what has been posted here, anyone can buy one..... |
