OK we have an 2006 CRD with about 30K and I was wondering how does one know if the famous EGR valve is failing? I have been reading a lot about he EGR valve, but not how does is manifest itself.

Having moved to California, I rather take care of it myself then to go to a dealer!

Many thanks

the europeans

Mine is long-since disconnected (SEGR Circuit), but the EGR failing (buildup in the valve and eventual servo failure) would manifest as a loss of power, erratic driveability, stuttering, engine error codes, etc. Basically, it'll get stuck closed (and you'll be lucky) and the computer will just complain about it... OR it gets stuck open and you basically have exhaust going into the intake all the time (even when the engine REALLY doesn't need it).

Since you have relatively low miles and it's an '06, you may be in luck. We seem to have had very few reports EGR failure around here (obviously with exceptions) since the US mandate to sell ULSD (15 ppm Sulfur) at the pump. This would be completely unfamiliar to any european experiences since euro-spec diesel has been ultra-low for years and is better regulated for consistency.

If you disconnect the SEGR Circuit, how do you know it is open or closed? or does it automatically stay in the closed position?

Thanks

The EGR valve is spring loaded closed. This is where you want the valve, always. You get the poor running engine when it sticks open.

Ah cool good to know.
But there is no real way of knowing if it is open unless I take it apart and fix it har har (Home Improvement), right?
We have no symptoms yes, but I feel a slight stutter from time to time and don't think that used to be there. Thats why, but we don't have any codes yet!

thx
