Post subject: KBB.com finally listing used CRD values for 2005.

Also, I have a local toyota dealer that has an online setup for getting your black book value. Guess what... The difference between the kbb.com trade-in value and the black book value that dealers actually use is a $4500 difference! Yep, that $4500 undeclared rebate for left over 2005 models has screwed all of us 2005 owners for trade-in value.

Only if you plan on trading it in. :)

Or if you plan on getting a decent payout from your insurance company after someone wrecks into you, or you wreck it. Just the whole corporate policy of american car makers is really starting to get to me.

When I traded in my Honda for this, it was like money in the bank. Trade in was VERY high for 18 months old and 18,000 miles. Only down about $3000. Here, we're talking a total loss after 8 months of $10,000 if insurance were to try to write a check...

That is why my insurance is always "replacement coverage" for everything I own, not "value coverage".

Disclaimer: I don't know the exact industry terms for these types of insurance, but my agent explained them to me long ago, and I chose then and have never looked back. :)

Cars aren't an appreciating asset. That said at the end of every model year the same thing happens to all cars, the dealers / auto makers discount them to make room for the next model. First year you take the biggest hit.

Give it time. If there is no CRD in '07 then values will rebound.

I believe it is called 'gap' insurance. We got it on ours when we bought it. We figured it was worth a little extra to not get stuck paying off a totalled vehicle.

Try running the numbers for a CRD vs the same spec with a V6. CRD still showing @ $2500 premium over the gasser. Think you are looking at the classic "try to get rid of your car in the first year" beating. Look at the bright side, I also have a 2 yr old Impala that's worth 1/2 what I paid for it. Last Fall's deep discounts and rebates killed resale across the board.

Yeah, can you tell I was grumpy yesterday?

Anyhow, I'm just pointing out that my Honda, by having no rebates on the model, only lost 13% in 18 months and really was not a loss since I got 18 months of use out of it.

American car makers are hurting because of this. When people get a loan, they want residual value without having to pay extra for GAP insurance just to break even.

I'm not getting rid of the Jeep. Even with the possible transmission issues, it's cheaper for me to pay full cost to have a new transmission installed every 2-3 years then it would be to try and trade out of it.

I need to go 4-wheeling again, that will cheer me up... Doing something that most other vehicles can't do. 8)

Oh Yeah, I'm even more pissed-off, but you nailed it. I know my sister's Pilot at least shifts right and doesn't blow oil.

Yup, it also burns premium, gets about 24 MPG and has a 3,500 lb tow rating if I am not mistaken.

Agreed. I traded in my '05 GTO on the CRD this week. The '05 had 24K miles in 14 months so I took a decent loss on it. Plus, GTOs don't resale for much which is a real shame. It's a great well built car with the Corvette LS2 in it. But with GM hurting so much in the press people don't want Pontiac. Luckily, the 0% loan on the CRD helps take care of some of that. Plus, I have family at Freightliner so I got EP price.

I don't know what all the whining is about. I checked KBB and my '05 sport with a sunroof and 25k miles lists for retail sale at abot 22.5. I only paid 22.8 for the car new last year. Even if you consider the trade value at 17.1, or the private sale (which is the only thing i would do) at 19.8 I don't consider this a problem at all. Using the lowest figure (trade) and my purchase price shows a depreciation of about 25% which I believe is "normal" for American cars in their first year. Plus, I have driven the vehicle for 14 months without any maintenece cost as I get free oil changes. I did just spend some money on the 25k service, but that is to be expected.

Stop whining and just drive the dam thing. If you don't like it, put an ad on ebay, or craigs list. If you trade you will lose the most so the dealer can make his profit. Wow, what a shock!!

Insurance companies and dealers use Black Book (auction) values, not KBB values. I'm not getting rid of it, but if some idiot wrecks into me, I'm out a whole bunch of money! Subtract at least $4,500 off of your $17k KBB figure, and that is what the problem is.

With the Liberty diesel no longer available, there was NO NEED for Jeep to add the $4500 undeclared rabate on them... Just piss poor corporate management.

They probably will not do the same thing with the '06 models, so us early adopters will be the only ones punished by the corporate BS.

No, "gap coverage" is when you owe more than the vehicle is worth, they will pay off your loan. Required on leased vehicles by many banks. I had this on our last van since it was never worth what we owed on it.... (darn Chevy POS).

With the CRD we paid enough cash that unless CRDs start blowing up killing babies and puppies - we will never owe more than it is worth. No need for gap.

I am talking "replacement" vs. "value" coverage. With replacement they have to pay you whatever it costs to get a comperable replacement. With value they pay you whatever it was worth - which is where the black book value would come into play.

Replacement coverage can be real good if they don't make your vehicle anymore, you can get a nice upgrade.... :) Not that I would know or anything. [wink]

I will worry about the insurance company black book pricing only if my car gets crushed. Beyond that, the KBB values seem right on target. As I said before, stop whining like a 12 year old girl who sees a spider and just drive the dam thing. Try worrying about a new earth killer asteroid instead. If one hits the earth you won't have any thing to worry about and will get to watch the pretty colors before the shock wave blows you to atoms.

Thanks for the name calling. I try to bring some useful info to this board in case some people wonder what happened to their residual values and I get good responses like "replacement value" insurance.

Then there's your comment....

Maybe your knowledge of how a 12 year old girl whines is from your identical twin...

Now children behave. You two should kiss and make up.

The evil moderators here will delete this thread if you get to throwing rocks at one another.
