Hello, I'm new to the forum.
I have a 2010 Jeep Liberty with the 3.7l V6. The Jeep has about 90,000 miles on it, and the oil is changed every 4,000 miles or so. The engine seems to burn a quart of oil every 1500 miles with normal driving. Recently, I went on a camping trip and used the Jeep to pull the camper, which weighs about 4,000 lbs. Needless to say, the engine was working harder than normal. I changed the oil right before I went on the trip, and made sure it was at the correct level. The oil has about 900 miles on it now, and when I checked the level last night, it was nearly 2 quarts low. There are no leaks, and there is never any smoke visible in the exhaust. I've never smelled burning oil either. The engine does have piston slap when it is cold at times. I've used 5W20, 5W30, and 10W30. The engine runs the smoothest on 10W30, but none of them seem to change the amount of consumption.
Is this kind of oil consumption a common thing with these engines, or is this a sign of excessive internal wear? The engine has been great otherwise.

Thanks.

Don't sound good. I have a 2012 Liberty. I use the Valvoline syn power 5w-20w . I have 43k on her and do some beach driving with her when surf fishing. She dos not use any oil. Level is the same for the 5k oil changes. I'm sure a forum member with more knowledge will chime in soon . Good luck. :JEEPIN:

Maybe it is your PCV valve? Supposedly you don't see any smoke with them but gaskets and seals will start to fail (from my limited understanding).

Thanks for the replies. I'll definitely check to see if there are any symptoms of a bad PCV valve showing.

Honestly, they are so cheap I would just replace it and see if improves. I've never done one myself but they are supposed to be fairly easy.

Pull the top off your air filter and see if there is oil on top of the filter.
If you have a stock filter, make sure you change it often. If you don't the vacuum from the intake increases the pull from the make up air hose, which can actually suck oil mist out of the hose instead of replacing the air removed by the PCV,
