Has anyone found ULSD and been running it in their CRD yet? If so, where did you find it and how does the CRD run, especially in comparison to straight D2? I've been reading of multiple sightings of ULSD at Texaco and Shell stations in Atlanta GA, but not from any CRD owners...

When I was in ND visiting my parents in May I noticed that the Cenex station in New Town, ND had a pump tagged as ULSD. After screwing up and posting that a Chevron station in Phoenix had ULSD and being wrong I decided to check (I don't remember who corrected me, I'm glad they did, thank you). According to the station it is ULSD. I didn't get into why they had it and no one else did.

I think this will be a hit-miss type of thing. USLD is being phased in as we speak so you not know when you are actually getting it. I know we are now getting it here at work beacause the last truck tank of fuel they dropped off is so clear it looks like water. This just happened this week. I suspect that how fast you get it depends on how much fuel your station where you buy fuel goes through. The more they go through the faster you get USLD. You could be getting it now. I don't know if the color thing is 100% accurate but I stongly suspect it is. Sure made me look twice at the fuel filter I was filling. It doesn't smell as stong either come to think about it. I had to smell it to make sure it wasn't water going in the filter!!

Normally when I drive the Jeep after the wife has been driving it for a week or so I get on it to get all the soot out of the thing, even with my B10 49 cetane fuel. Anyway this time I drove it the other day there was no soot when I romped on the Liberty and it did seem to have a little more snap or pep on the take off. I am thinking that my last fill may have been a first shot of ULSD fuel and maybe things will get better.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe I read somewhere that the refineries were supposed to start making ULSD on 6/1/06 and the suppliers/fuel stations were supposed to be clean enough to hit 15 PPM by 9/1/06. If this is the case, it likely means that all diesel is probably in the process of being diluted with ULSD right now, and I would assume the sulpher content will get lower over the next two months.

The Wentzville MO Ugas has it. I am on my second tank and really haven't noticed any difference. I am running with a CEL untill another EGR valve comes in. Maybe when the EGR is fixed I will notice an improvement in fuel economy with the new fuel.

Hopefully when it is readily available our EGR issues will go away.

I wonder, for those of us without a failure yet, how the switch over will effect our EGR valves. We are probably 90% on the way to failure, but the switch over will delay that failure just long enough to be out of the 3yr/36k warranty...

The Flying-J Truckstop by me has been, and still is, very greenish colored fuel. Speedway by me is close to clear with a tint of yellow. Energy Plus 24 Co-Op B2 has always been clear as water. None of these are ULSD yet by me.

I don't think color can be relied upon as proof of ULSD. Maybe it will be a partial indicator. I'm curoius to see the Flying-J Fuel after they switch over.

I've had it here in southwest louisiana at a couple of Conoco stations for a while now. It definitely runs much better on this and blows 75%less smoke. The clattering is gone and the engine runs smoother as well.

Also it is green and the exhaust doesn't smell like diesel exhaust.

I've been running ULSD almost 100% of the time since mid June. I drive 600 miles a week or so and its amazing. I think I get better mileage. It could just be the engine breaking in more (only got 9k on the odo). The ULSD is actually cheaper ($2.79/gal) than the normal stuff. I get about 28~30mpg on the highway running the new stuff.

I always thought fuel was clear and the color was a function of the additives and such each station/dealer concocted (as a marketing strategy mostly). But this may only apply to gasoline. A frined of mine used to run a tanker truck around the area in his off-hours and said the refinery mixed it right there for him, and the fuel (he was hauling gas mostly) was always clear he said.

Wouldn't the #2 still smell like diesel, even if cleaned of the sulfur? Could that station be running bio?

Color in diesel depends on Crude Source, Distillation Process and Dyes. It is not an indication of Cetane Numbers, Cloud Point, Viscosity or Content.

In many states, diesel color denotes is tax (use) status. Fuel designated for farm (non-hiway) use is colored differently than road use fuel. The agriculture diesel is taxed at a lower rate and sells for less at the pump. Thus, police, truck inspectors, etc can check the color of your fuel to see if you are cheating-i.e. using the cheaper ag fuel in your vehicle.

Those pumps are mark as off road use only and not usually available to public and that off road fuel is always dyed RED for inspection purpose. The odds of your Jeep ever being check for farm/off road fuel is slim to none. Only guys I have ever heard of being checked is farm trucks and that is rare. Around here half the diesel PU's are running the untaxed RED fuel, because the fed's have no way to enforce it without the help of local police or sheriff or as in MO the MODOT Vehicle inspectors. I know one personally and he lives near by and I ask him once and said the state never inspects those farmers PU because they don't have the time and manpower, not to mention that in most states the RED off road fuel has a state tax in the sale price as MO does and they could care less about the fed's. Their are several different colors used for for non road tax fuel depending what it is, one of the avation fuels is dyed blue but I'm not sure which.
