I had to adjust my lights because people were flashing me, and I even drive with fog lights only while I’m hauling a trailer because of the weight it puts on the back, it points my lights into their eyes...

Most people don’t mean anything by flashing you, its just a reminder. When they flash you again after you flash them back, they are probubly saying "lower your frickin lights". It's very rude if you continue to drive a vehicle that shines light unnecessarily in people’s eyes. I do agree with tjkj2002, that sometimes it just cannot be avoided due to vehicle height, but when I got my liberty, the lights simply shined too high and that was my responsibility.

I have only flashed my off road lights at one guy. He was tailgating me hard, because I was doing the speed limt  flashing his highs, laying on the horn etc... So I hit my rear basket lights and that put an end to that (this was in my montero)

I usually just stomp on the brakes!
He hits me - his fault, his insurance. He runs off road, his wreck.
When I had my bike I'd step on the centerstand hard. The resulting huge trail of sparks going over thier hood usually made em hit the brakes! :o

When I got my first Liberty I got flashed all the time some people would just leave their brights on even after I flashed them back to let them know I didn’t have my brights on I wasn’t mad at the people who flashed me because they thought that my high beams were on and I’m fairly sure that most of them weren’t mad at me for letting them know I didn’t have them on and the ones who were mad were probably mad long before I ever showed up in there lives and you cant blame that on me or my Liberty.

A little later I noticed that when it was foggy out I didn’t get flashed I was using my fog lights so I tried using them even when it wasn’t foggy out and to my surprise the flashing was reduced almost to a stop and I got better visibility.

It seems stupid that having more lights on then needed would stop the flashing but it did so now I use them all the time I know some people in this string would think I’m breaking the law and putting the other people on the road in peril but I’m not breaking the law and in any on road situation the other people are only half of the equation I’m the other more important half and I believe that I have found the safest solution for all parties involved.
:) :)

I also use my fog lights for improved visibility. It's amazing how much difference they make.

I hate it when people flash me when i have the fog lights on. They should know you cant have high beams when you are using your fog lights, then again my headlights and fog lights are silverstars.

I apologize for bringing back a dead post, but I feel that there is some misinformation on here that needs to be addressed and this was the soonest I could get back on here.

Flashing your highbeams at someone is illegal even if it's because someone else flashed theirs at you. It's not as if you're defending yourself and meeting a threat with an equal amount of force.

Actually it's not illegal to flash your high beams in AZ. The issue would only occur if you continued to flash them or left them on when they could interfere with the operation of other vehicle's.

Flashing of the headlights is commonly used in this state and many others to signal other drivers of many things. Some of those being; a vehicle traveling in the same lane that you want to pass (28-723), a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction with their high beams on, and even signaling another driver at a 4-way stop to continue through an intersection. Again, the issue occurs when you leave your high beams on *as in constantly on or constantly flashing (and you are not an emergency vehicle) & not flashing once or twice*.

SethX9 wrote:
The real point here is that quite often lifted vehicles have their lights up in people's faces and that adds to the hostility many have for 4x4 owners.

Couple of things to consider for a lifted vehicle in AZ… If the lifted vehicle is a pickup then mud flaps must be installed once the modification is made (even if the lift is only ½”). For any vehicle, the headlights can be no higher than 54” from the ground to the center of the lights, and they must also be adjusted so that the low beams do not interfere in the driving of other vehicles.

SethX9 wrote:
Why add to that hostility and confirm their prejudice? Defusing the situation is the anwer not throwing more fuel on the fire.

I believe it would be more of a courtesy of letting the other driver know that their high beams are on. If they take it as hostile then they already have issues and nothing I did or didn't do was going to diffuse the situation.

Sorry to pick apart your post like that, but I didn't want people to get the wrong impression of things here.

With that being said… I have no problem admitting when I am wrong, but I need proof to back it.

Here’s the link for Arizona’s traffic law. If you find something please point it out. If it’s there then it will be between 28-701 & 28-966.
Title 28

Mike - when a reply is full of facts like yours I have no problem with having my posts picked apart. I'm here to learn not be right.

So...okay it's not illegal. COOL! Back in Tennessee I got yanked for flashing what turned out to be a sherrif's deputy. Reason #6,742 why I left The South: Outrageously overzealous constabulary. And I'll agree that a quick couple'a flashes is not a big deal either way. I believe the "grow up" comments were (at least in my case) directed towards the posters who were positing the idea that it was fun to deliver retribution in the form of a bazillion lumens.

Thanks for the links to the statutes...

Yea cops here in TN or at least in Memphis and Shelby County...hell even State Troopers now that I think of another incident...don't take kindly to cars flashing their brights...especially if they think it is to warn other motorists of a speed trap of some kind up ahead...I had a friend just get pulled over last night for flashing is lights at other motorists warning of a speed trap ahead, when in fact a second squad car happened to be in the group of cars he flashed...luckily he just got a warning though...not sure what exactly they would ticket for that...i'll have to read up on the traffic and driving laws again...

I know in Fl you have to turn your brights off 200 feet before comming up behind a vehicle, and 500ft if approaching head on. So if you have laws like that, then maybe they would try to write a ticket for it?? Though I've never heard of that being done before. And I'm pretty sure there is an offense called "Tail Gating"...a now a few people who have gotten tickets for that yet the police seem to love to ride the KJ bumper....they must be heavy admirers  . I did a nice brake check on a Sheriff's Tahoe.....could have sworn the car in front of me hit the brakes heavily............... 8)
