What else could one buy for about $23k that offers what the 4x4 CRD offers? Also, the transmission mated to the CRD is used in applications with nearly 400 lb. ft. of torque, such as the Hemi. Since a Jeep tech from another forum indicated that Jeep got one lot of "bad" TCs, I suppose that is the problem. I don't think DC "derates" transmissions according to varying torque specifications within the same model transmission line. That would not be cost efficient, to say the least. That reasoning would assume that Jeep management stipulated that 11k of the 545 transmissions would be cheapened especially for the Liberty in order to increase profits. Not reasonable.
Also, shopping a service department is wise, except that personnel change and dealers come and go. DCX puts the squeeze on dealership service. One poster mentioned looking for a dealer that also sells the Dodge Cummins, and that is a good choice since there is at least one diesel tech on the property. But, the management can still be a PINTA.
But, for $23k, what else ya gonna buy that comes close? My mileage is 20C/25.8H, close to EPA estimated. I don't drive it for mileage, I use the throttle since I was accustomed to a vehicle with real power and acceleration. The CRD ride compared to that vehicle is about like riding a city bus - not very exciting. In NC, the diesel is the ticket for avoiding the annual emissions testing, testing which is simply State sponsored theft.
For those who had repeated problems and needed a reliable vehicle, that is, those for whom the CRD was the primary vehicle, I can understand they might want to dump it. But that circumstance would apply whatever the vehicle was.
