I have said it before and I will say it again. I wouldnt own a liberty if it wasnt for the CRD. I will also say I would probably own a wrangler and I will own the Gladiator (fingers crossed) if they made them in a diesel for US.

I had a 94 Cherokee with 200,000 on it. It was starting to get tired. So, I was kinda looking at the CRD
but the number of problems I wasn't in a hurry to get one. Then I saw one on ebay for $19,600 with
65miles on it. The only reason I purchased it was because its a diesel. All the other SUV's that get descent
MPG are jacked up cars that can tow squat. The ones that could tow had poor MPG.

But, in all honesty, if Toyota or Nissan had a diesel Tacoma/Frontier thats what I would have bought.

I have a friend that is sales mgr at at big Toyata dealership and say Toyota is bringing a diesel Tundra to the US for late '07 MY, but he thinks D/C with beat Toyota to the punch by 6 months. He says D/C will announce the diesel 1/2 Ton Ram in Sept or Oct with actual delivery pre Christmas this fall. He says they will have a V-6 diesel by either MB or VM but his money is on them having the VM V6 engine and that D/C will also announce the VM diesel I-4 engine that is in Liberty CRD will be offered in the Dakota. He thinks D/C is going for to risk the companys future on diesel sales and want's to start by grabbing the #1 PU & SUV sales where the really big $$$$ proffits are today. He seems to think that VW and D/C stand to jump 3 years ahead of other mfg's in sales because of their advanced diesels and the capability to provide the demand at the dealerships. I am thinking he just may be right.

He made following comment when I asked him about FFV E85 vehicles. "It will do same as last time, last about 2 years then be gone once the subsities are pulled and people see the real cost of the E85 fuel."

I have a 1999 FFV Ranger, I've run exactly 5 tanks of E85 through it. There is a gas station about 4 blocks away that carries it so its readily available. I tried it, didn't see the advantages and am not convinced there are really any environmental reasons to run E85. The only good reason seems to be supporting the grain belt states effort to develop another market for thier corn

The Ranger runs fantastic with E85, but running E85 cuts the service interval for oil changes, and they recommend full synthetic if you run E85 at all. I get about 10% lower mpg but the cost of E85 is about 10% less than regular most of the time, so thats a wash.

All in all the cost of maintenance goes up and the only advantage is that I can get off the line a little faster.

If you really want to see a difference in engine life and help the "grain belt states", use BioDiesel! This is 90% of the reason I bought a diesel in the first place. Now it is only 20% (I actually drove one and now I just love driving a Turbo Diesel!).

I use B20 - B99 in my CRD, in my former TDI (200K miles), in my father's RAM 3500, and my old 82' Rabbit Pickup (aka - Caddy). I have always had minimal if any issues with engines running B20(+) and I see a slight increase in mpg.

To add to all of that, I get my biodiesel from suppliers that use oil from crops harvested within the United States!

"BioDiesel, no war required."

Back to the original question: Answer is NO. There are plenty of gas hog 4X4 SUV and light trucks that are better suited for my needs (both for comfort and reliability/quality) than the Liberty. The CRD was the only reason I got a Jeep product.

Short answer: Diesel brought me to Jeep.

My wife and I were in the SUV market (dog, baby, camping, paragliding, kayaking). She worked for Nissan, and we could have gotten a discount on one of their (admittedly) excellent cars or SUVs. My friend's 25 year old Pathfinder STILL cranks up the mountain via a stream-bed. And Kia was offering ridiculous deals and warrantees on mid-sized SUVs. We had an old Wagoneer as a kid, but I wasn't thinking about a Jeep at all.

But I saw the writing on the wall, and knew diesel engines were the REAL flex-fuel vehicles of the future. In 5 years, E85 still won't be economical without subsidies...so gasers will be expensive. And if you want to ride out hurricane/arab price gougers, you can always store a bunch of diesel, or biodiesel, or even make your own. Then there is the mileage and my crazy fuel research. I pushed real hard for it, and she thought it was cute enough to like. The torque made her love it. Heavy foot for a little gal.

One month after we bought the 2005 CRD, the oil companies were gouging people with 2-3x price increases and shortages (a-holes). Meanwhile, I could fill up with biodiesel (price unchanged) or from a not-to-be-mentioned 275 gallon tank in my basement. The oil companies continue to reap windfall profits manipulating a monopolized markets, and I continue to flip them the bird when I drive by their gas stations.

Best purchase ever, even with the issues.

No, I would not have - and No I would probably not again...

The Jeep line to me offers little to nothing that I can't get elsewhere - and I am not sure about Jeep reliability (although I think DC is improving in this regard).

In fact, I think that the Liberty is lacking in some things that should have been in there but they messed up. (Like rear vent windows!)

Anyway - it was the CRD and only the CRD that I was interested in. I love this little motor. If I could get this type of motor in a mid sized 4 door truck I would be ALL OVER IT...

But I loves me some CRD!

Love my '99 XJ, but it's modded for playing off road in the rocks and mud and gets only around 15MPG as a result. But it's VERY mechanically sound.

I would not on a KJ if not for the diesel option. They seem like decent rigs, but my neighbor (a Jeep mechanic) warned me off the 3.7L gas engines early on, which is why (at the time) I got a TJ (wrangler) instead.

Were it not for the 4.0L 6, I'd probably not own an older jeep. Were not for the 2.8L CRD, I'd definately not own a newer Jeep. :) I'd have a Nissan or Toyota instead.

No, probably not. I needed something to pull the jetsled for salmon/steelhead/sturgeon/ walleye fishing and it also had to get reasonable fuel mileage. The CRD has done it all with style and grace. It being a nice off road machine is a plus, as many older ramps are not that great, little more than a narrow gravel switchback in the dike or riprap..

If not for the diesel engine option, I'd never have looked at the Liberty. My wife wanted a small SUV and I was pretty negative about any SUV with the oil prices going the way they are. My business travel takes me to the Pacific rim 1/2 dozen times a year and I was familiar with seeing small SUVs with diesels. I thought no one sold them in the US. My wife thought she wanted a Liberty, a vehicle I didn't know much about. I wasn't even willing to look until I became aware of the CRD. Once I made the Liberty + CRD connection in my brain, I got interested.

On the general subject of SUV diesels, I'm about 1/2 way through a 4 week trip and am writing this from Singapore. During my first two weeks in the Philippines, it seemed like every SUV or light truck was a diesel. In Singapore I'm riding around in a diesel taxi every day. My first thought is to say that I suppose the American manufacturers will catch up. But I'm seeing many diesel SUVs like the Ford Everest and other models / brands similar to models that we have in the US. So it looks like most of the brands already have diesel models available. What's holding back the diesels in the US? Vehicles like the CRD are the norm over here, not the exception like the CRD is in the US.

I owned a '92 Cherokee Country when I met my hubby. He's pretty tall so his head rubbed on the roof and he didn't like it. I loved it and was very sad to see it go. It probably goes back to my high school boyfriend owning a CJ5!

When we were thinking about a diesel, he mentioned that the Liberty had the CRD, I jumped all over it! They definitely bumped the roof up on it. It would have been between that and a Jetta or Passat. I would like a NB but I have small children and it would be a real pain to get them in and out of a 2 door.

If they do make a Wrangler with the 4 doors in a diesel, we'd probably get one of those too 'cause my hubby has always wanted one.
