Jeep Recalls 2002-2006 Liberty SUV

By KEN THOMAS
The Associated Press
Tuesday, August 1, 2006; 5:13 PM

WASHINGTON -- Chrysler Group is recalling more than 800,000 Jeep Liberty sport utility vehicles because of the potential loss of steering control, the automaker said Tuesday.

DaimlerChrysler AG spokesman Max Gates said the front suspension lower ball joint could experience excessive wear and looseness, leading the ball joint to separate. The recall affects 832,000 Liberty SUVs from the 2002-2006 model years.

Gates said the automaker has received 111 complaints about the problem and reports of three injuries. He said in many of the complaints, the ball joint failed, dropping the vehicle's front end onto one or both of the front tires.

The front suspension has troubled the Liberty before. The automaker recalled more than 300,000 2002-2003 Liberty vehicles in November 2003 because of problems with the ball joint, but some of the parts were damaged during the shipping process or installation.

Earlier this year, the government opened an investigation of the 2004 Liberty after receiving complaints about the ball joint separating. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the alleged separations happened on Libertys with 25,000 miles to more than 67,000 miles.

The vehicle has since been redesigned and Gates said the automaker believes the ball joint part will not experience the same wear patterns.

Owners will receive notices about the recall in September and the ball joints will be replaced at no cost.

Please read the "announcement." It is the very first thread at the top of the General Discussions.

This is EXACTLY why the Announcement at the top of the page does not work. People don't look up there because stuff never changes. Some of the Announcements just sit there for months with no reply. I have seen 3 threads in the CRD section locked and unlocked trying to direct people to this announcement - people just don't look there and it's loosing valuable traffic and now people are getting lost in the crossfire of constantly redirecting ball joint recall threads.

Let it build some useage (or steam) for awhile as a normal thread, then make it a sticky. But an announcement is like a one time thing that, in the past, moderators or administrators use to make more of a site specific, operating type thing - so people are just not looking at it.

Or, maybe make the announcement all CAPS with a crapload of ****** on either side of the title, AND, get rid of the low traffic volume stickies now up there. Maybe include the date of the press release in the title, and I don't know if the title color can be changed - if so do it - but right now, it just looks like everything else... :) 8) 8) 8)

Yeah to that^^^^^^^^. I was the first one to report the news yesterday. One other person did right after I did. Just different topic headings. KJ-BOL took it upon himself to say he was locking our threads and started that "announcment". I guess some people have to have the "last hurrah" all for themselves. I'm suprised this one isn't locked. I have a bad taste in my mouth with LOSTKJS forum. I guess being the first to report it and getting shut down didn't sit well with me. I think apologies are in store for a few people.

I just want this thing to show up and get discussed like nothing else, right now, it's not visible at the top as is. I especially want people to read how the "vehicle has since been redesigned" and that is the fix? It has not been redesigned except for a new grill and hood and gage cluster in '05+

These stickies should be cut loose or moved:

I totally agree with you! That's what I wanted to do too. Get the news out to the KJ site right away. And I did. Hope this thread doesn't get locked down.

First of all I want to apologize for this - I did not know this was going to cause such an uproar
The main reason why I did Lock some threads was to make sure everybody reads and posts on the same thread and to not cause a bunch of threads being posted everywhere and having to sort thru them all looking for answers/opinions/news.
I did not realize at the time that I actually locked the first post about this recall - I took the first one on top and made it the official one - obviously for myself that one was on two threads above yours and I did not pay attention to which one was the first - had I done that, yours would have been the one I made it as announcement.
Now for the comment "I guess some people have to have the "last hurrah" all for themselves. " - I'm not in any way trying to shower myself with glory just because I made this as an announcement - all I did was think about the rest of us seeing this as potential news. All I see is that in turn you are a bit upset just because your post was the first to make it to our forum and now it is all but gone - see your own comment ("I guess being the first to report it and getting shut down didn't sit well with me")
- I'm gratefull for the fact that you took the time to actually hurry and give us all a chance to see this. - I do not even look for this stuff on the net and it is actually great that people like you take the time to do some surfing and come up with news that are good to all of us.
Last... I took the time to actually send PMs to everyone that had posted on every thread that I locked - I do know for a fact that you are NOT one of them - unfortunately I did not send a PM to you after I locked your thread - but I do know for a fact that the one person that posted after you got a PM and I actually got a response from him thanking me for at least letting him know why I did it. I still have to hear anything from the other 5 people I PMed yesterday after I took action - so far I have not had any messages back and there is still one that has not seen my PM

I still think the last two remaining stickies should be moved to a better fit location. "Recommended Tools For the Trail" may fit better in the 4x4 section. "Win a Jeep Jamboree USA Trail Ride for two!" could fit better in the EVENTS section. Thanks for moving the first ones, cleans things up nicely and gets better focus on the Announcement.

Hi, If you want to find out if you qualify for this recall you can call the Jeep customer hotline @ 1-800-992-1997 then press #3 and then press #1. Have your VIN ready, they need the last 8 digits from it to pull your jeep up.
I bought mine used and didnt know if the work had been done previously in 2003. I then confirmed it stated mine already had the work done for the first 2003 recall on the LBJ's,
Question? does that mean mine wont get the newer parts with this current recall? Or are they still using the same parts from the original recall.

Needless to say i updated them with the new address so i can recieve updates for recalls. I would tell everyone that has bought a used one to update Jeep's data base with your current info or it will be sent to the previos owner i believe. Thanks, MattyMac

So why did I not get the courtesy of a PM? As of this posting I still have not recieved a PM from you(KJ-BOL) explaining yourself. The only person who did PM me was John. It would have been no deal if you did PM me. But you left me out. WHY? You don't have to apologize to the whole forum, just the ones you were going to lock out. I am glad all the moderators got together on this one. Yall need guidelines too. We shouldn't lock everything. Like the CRD guys said, they don't come out of their world too much. So the post over in their area should be there. I posted because it was big news. I checked to see if there were any posts in the 4x4 and General forum and didn't see anything. I just put it in the wrong forum by mistake. If I would have seen one already, I wouldn't have posted. I could care less about being first. It's all just about having posts locked or being told you're being locked. That's all. I'm glad John could apologize to me for the moderator/s actions. Joe

A couple of things...KJ-BOL was the first one to recognize that maybe we should open the threads back up. He was not trying to censor or upset anyone in the process of locking down a few repetitive threads. In the Admin/Moderator section we have been doing a lot of work discussing some housekeeping of the site to keep it from getting cluttered. That was the premise he was following. When we all took a look at this specific post as a "SAFETY ISSUE", it was decided that it should/could be posted in any and all sections. If KJ-BOL missed you I am sure it was an oversite. This site is not our first job and things do slip thru the cracks.

As for "Sticky/Announcement" placement, I know it looks like there are no responses but you have to look at the number of "VIEWS". Many look and read but do not post to Sticky/Announcement unless they have something important to add. We can not guarantee that everyone sees a thread but if they are at least on top, there is a good chance that most will notice and read.

As someone who has had/is having problems with LBJs could we maybe start a NEW forum JUST for LBJ related posts/threads?? I for one would like to be able to print out portions and give them to my dlr/potential losters/Lib owners, etc. Right now there are LBJ posts all over the place. I think we can afford a new forum for such an important issue?

I think we need to issue a LOST press release to all the papers that printed this article to explain to them what really happened with the LBJs. I think that they would be happy to print a counterpoint to DCs story!

PS - This is my 1000th post!! :D
