backstory...

A while ago, before I ever had the jeep offroad, it would overheat when sitting in traffic or going very slowly up a dirt hill or whatever. It turns out the fan was stuck. We're not sure what caused it because we took the fan out force 12v to it and nothing happened. we took it apart, couldn't find anything wrong, put it back together and checked it again. We put 12v to it and it immediately started turning. We wrote it off as a fluke because nothing wrong could be found, but it worked when reassembled. Since then (probably 1.5-2 years ago) I never had another issue with overheating.

Yesterday, I was driving locally, but fast enough to keep air flowing across the radiator. As soon as I stopped it started creeping up past the 3/4 mark on the temp guage. I was close to home, so I went and parked the jeep.

I guess my question is will 95+ heat be too much for the radiator and/or fan to handle if the Jeep isn't moving? Could my anti-freeze/water mix/level be off? Is it a fluke?

Thats weird, I also had a fan gremlin a while back.

See Below:
Image

Unfortunately mine came about while on a trip up north to do some wheeling. Totally ruined my trip.

I took it back to the dealer after ripping everything apart and finding no problems.

They kept it for the day and gave it back claiming absolutely nothing was wrong. (Fan was not spinning when I parked it in their parking lot that morning)
Sure enough I went out and turned it on. After about 5 minutes whoosh, on went the fan; I thanked him for fixing it and the coolant flush and refill, despite him claiming they didnt touch it. Drove it off the lot without a dime in repair bills.

Racefan, do you run the A/C?

I had the mud issue that everyone mentions, but I've been fine since my last mud trip. I cleaned the crap out of the fan and radiotor after the trip, so it's not mud. I had to clean a good gallon jug of ROCKS out of the fan. They were rattling in there for days afterward until I finally took it off and removed em.

i'll go do an idle test during my lunch break to make sure the fan comes on.

Gris, YES the AC is on & I've run it without the AC & still fine no problems

I've been paying attention to it also with the high temps we've been getting here in New England

The cooling system in the kj is VERY good. I towed a boat in 100degree heat with the A/C on climbing hills none stop and it didnt move. So it does not have anything to do with that. Most likely its either a bad fan, or mud in the radiator.

maybe a bad fan, but it's going. I just went outside and started it up. Turned the A/C on and the fan started going. Definately NOT mud in the radiator. It's been powerwashed thouroughly.

I'll see if it happens again today since we're hitting 100 again.

Does anyone know if anyone ever did a swap on the fan to one of the high-flow aftermarket ones?

I do not know of any, but you can buy the engine driven fan that would be much cheaper. Thats whatcomes with the towing pack.

Make sure you cleaned the radiator and not the A/C condensor. The black rad you see through the grill is NOT the radiator, Its silver and is behind that.

we run our 4x4 renegade daily rider in temps 105-117.
up & down the road ac on. we also offroad as well ac blastin windows up. 105- 117.
the fans always runs & the temp holds at mid range.
note when off road we are talking desert washes, engine rpm between 1500 -2000 rpm in 4low in d2
As long as that fan is on & your levels are proper 117oF is alot cooler than 180+oF engine coolant.
our renegade came with stock with two upgrade options
1. tow group pkg
2. mopar skid group.
it's also an automatic.

It maybe time to wash out your radiator fins. Even road dirt can build up in there over time.

Had been on the trail doing only moderate obstacles. I was really looking forward to some hardcore stuff, then my bro busted a half shaft in his s10 and we had to head back to the entrance. It was then that the smoke started billowing. Luckily I was in the parking lot; and the ride home was all highway.
