Diesel Engines
Category Status Service

CJ-4 Soon to be released in OCT 2006. Designed for the 2007+ Diesels with a DPF(Diesel Particulate Filter). They will hopefully keep the exhaust cleaner for the DPF. Costs are projected to be 30%-40% higher than CI-4 or CI-4+. They have to use Group II Base Stock instead of the less expensive Group I Base Stock. Lower TBN of 8 to 9 but addititves are supposed to make up the difference.

*TBN: Total Base Number
Increases Longevity of Diesel Engines.

CI-4 and CI-4+ The Most Current for diesel engines. Made for pre 2007 Diesel engines with a TBN of 11 to 12.

CH-4 Current Introduced in 1998 for high-speed four-stroke engines. CH-4 oils are specifically designed for use with diesel fuels ranging in sulphur content up to 0.5% weight. Can be used in place of CD, CE, CF-4 and CG-4.

CG-4 Current Introduced in 1995 for high-speed four-stroke engines. CG-4 oils are specifically designed for use with diesel fuels ranging in sulphur content less than 0.5% weight. CG-4 oil needs to be used for engines meeting 1994 emission standards. Can be used in place of CD, CE and CF-4.

CF-4 Current Introduced in 1990 for high-speed four-stroke naturally

CF-2 Current Introduced in 1994 for severe duty, two stroke motorcycle engines. Can be used in place of CD-II.

CF Current Introduced in 1994 for off-road, indirect-injected and other diesel engines including those using fuel over0.5% weight sulphur. Can be used in place of CD.

CE Obsolete Introduced in 1987 for high-speed four-stroke naturally aspirated and turbo engines. Can be used in place of CC and CD.

CD-II Obsolete Introduced in 1987 for two-stroke motorcycle engines.

CD Obsolete Introduced in 1955 for certain naturally aspirated and turbo engines.

CC Obsolete Introduced in 1961 for all diesels.

CB Obsolete Introduced in 1949 for moderate-duty engines.

CA Obsolete Introduced in 1940 for light-duty engines.

Amsoil Synthetic Heavy Duty Diesel 15W/40 : CI-4+ rated, 12.2TBN

Amsoil Series 3000 (for diesels) 5W/30 : CI-4+ rated, 12.2 TBN

Amsoil Euro Car Formula 5W/40 : Made for the newer models, most likely it will be CJ-4 rated, 8.0 TBN

Shell Rotella T 5W/40 : CI-4+ rated, 11.5 TBN

NEW Shell Rotella T 15W/40 : CJ-4 rated, 8 TBN

All five above reduce soot and will work better than most in a CRD...with Amsoil Euro and NEW Rotella T probably doing a slightly better job...but maybe not a big difference. They were made to protect the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) by reducing soot, so you have to assume they might even help the 2005-2006 CRDs.

I think there may be some minor miss info here DW.

1. Shell website site state only 10% to 15% price differential.

2. The 15w-40 CJ-4 oil's on Mobil & Shell website are refering to it as a heavy duty oil for new large commercial '07 diesels.

3. These oils will also have a higher heat shear capabilities then current CI-4+ oils. Mobil 1 0w-40 is in this high heat shear range and is why it's used in chain/gear driven OHC/OHV engines, however our CRD is belt driven and ACEA A3 oil not necessary, but is in most heavy over the road large commercial diesels designed with 15w-40 to straight 40 wt oil use in mind.

4. The only thing needed to make a CJ4 oil is reduce the sulfate of ash to 1% or less and increase the high temp shear capability. There are limits on sulfur and phosphorous as well. The main reason is that these chemicals, when they get past the rings, ultimately end up in the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), and can't be burned out the way the soot is. They just collect in there over time and wilol eventually clog filters. Any synthetic class IV oil can be reformulated to meet this spec including Mobil Delvac 1 5w-40, class III oils like Rotella T 5w-40 will also be easy made to meet this rating. The only real problem was getting the detergent package correct for extended oil drains.

I wonder where the miss info is? The 20%-30% was a real number from a survey of large fleet services. They have had the CJ-4 since May. They could get it in bulk...quart and gallon sizes supposedly available on Oct.15th 2006. Maybe by the time the quart/gallon sizes are made available, the prices will be closer to 15% to 20%, but the way things are going...I doubt it will be cheaper

As for a simple way to formulate oils to meet the CJ-4 ratings...lower sulfate of ash is a parameter and the low TBN of 8+/- 1 is a parameter or result (whichever way you want to look at it). They have to start with a higher grade/price Group II base stock to meet this requirement. They do have to add an additive package to supplement the low TBN to get the longevity properties of a 12TBN+/- CI-4+/CI-4.

As for our use, I hope this info helps CRD Owners make an educated decision in thier choice of oil. I think any opil that meets the CI-4+/CI-4 will do just fine in the CRD. I prefer the oils with a higher TBN of 12 or better. With no DPF to worry about, a CJ-4 is not really needed for our CRDs.

Diesel Particulate Filter(DPF)...basically a "cooker" in the exhaust that operate at high temperatures ( I believe around 1300 degrees ) that burns the Particulate Matter(PM) in the exhaust emmisions. Like OldNavy stated, it is too handle the soot that remains in the exhaust before it exits the tailpipe.

***Just an Opinion*** I am a big fan of Amsoil. Since it is a true syntheticly engineered oil, it can have excellent wear/sheer/volitiliy/pour/flash properties engineered into it's formula.

There will be a lot of misinfo for awhile if nothing else from some poor smuck typing in the info for the engineers or websites. Mobil is having that problem at the present. M 1 0w-40 oil is not being labeled A3 for the high temp shear strength now (I have looked at some new bottles) for some reason and website says it is still ACEA A3 as does the tech line. So who knows???? Remember being synthetic base Group IV does not automaticly that it is a high temp shear strength oil, Mobil and Amsoil to mention only a few, has quite a few full synthetic Group IV oils that do not meet that standard and are not recommended in Chain Driven OHC engines, gas or diesel.

There also seems to be some mistaken idea that this CJ-4 plus oil can only be made from Group II or Group III non synthetic base stocks (I sometimes use the out dated term class here atv the forum) which is not true. It will actually be a little easier to make the Group IV oils CJ-4 plus then a Group II oil. The reason for the big deal with the 15w-40 non synthetic Group II oils like Delvac 1300 and the Shell 15w-40 is that this is the oils going into the big diesels and that is a MUCH, MUCH LARGER MARKET then small auto and light duty PU truck market. We will be hearing more about the new CJ-4 oils shortly as the oil mfg's start reformulating their diesel oils for car & PU truck market. You will most likely not see a 15w-40 CJ-4+ oil made for, or recommended by auto mfg's, they will be using 0w-40 or 5w-40 oils to aid in cold starts and MPG's and that seems to be almost an EPA mandate from my research and that does make sense to me. Now that said the Group II CJ 15w-40 oil is still an excellent oil for the CRD and if I was doing mostly highway miles in our CRD I would have no problem using the 15w-40 CJ over the Group IV 5w-40 CJ oil If I could get it cheaper.

One thing to always remember here is: synthetic oil always start off as what ever the max number is on a multigrade oil,

Group IV (synthetic oil) such as a 0w-40 oil is actually a 40w oil with additive package to help it achieve the 0w rating.

Group I, II, III oils (non synthetic oils) always start with the lowest number for base stock, so a 5w-40 in that oil, like Delvac 1300 5w-40 oil starts out as a 5w oil and has an additive package that helps it achieve the 40w rating.

As for pricing goes I will assume that we the customer will take it in the short's as usual from the oil company's.

I think we are both coming to the same conclussion...we don't really need the CJ-4 and CI-4+ or CI-4 is the best for our CRD's. 8)

I subscribe to a monthly newsletter from Shell......there's some useful info here for all us CRD owners.

Not had a chance to read everything yet as I'm at work.

Hey DW, aren't the Shell Rotella T's, both CI-4+ and CJ-4, 5W-40 rather than the 15W-40 that you posted?

Neat info guys! Hey I was wondering about something, I purchased my CRD under the "Miles to Freedom" program DCX has going in the U.S. in December 2005 which provided me with 2 years or 24,000 miles worth of free service/maintenance. I've already had my first oil change done at 6k miles, when I went to schedule it I stressed the fact that 0W-40 Synthetic Oil was the only thing recommended to be used in the CRD engine. They told me then that they didn't have any on hand but would get some within the next day. I neglected to ask what brand they had used, I would assume it was Mobil 1 though.

To anyone who goes to the dealership to get their oil changed or for anyone who could advise me, should I ask my service manager to make sure that they oil they use for my CRD is at least CI-4 or CI-4+? I'm really not up to speed on all the new diesel engine oils but do understand that Mobil 1 0W-40 does not meet those standards as I've read on this forum. Should I recommend that they get me some Rotella T for my 12k change?

My dealere uses Mobil 1. I had the first oil change free and made sure they only put in 6 1/2 quarts. The tech gave me the other 1/2 of the bottle for topping off.

If someone already mentioned this, call me crazy...

Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40: http://mobil1.com/USA-English/MotorOil/ ... 5W-40.aspx

It meets all API regs up to CI-4 whereas standard Mobil 1 0W-40 only goes up to CF. Kinda strange how Jeep recommends 0W-40 Snythectic oil be used although now 0W-40 (to my knowledge) meets the current highest standards, although several 5W-40 syn oils do...

Perhaps I should just coerce my dealership to start using Rotella T or Mobil 1 5W-40, eh?

Just back from Wally-World and they have moved the Shell & Chevron oils to the discontinued section do to lack of sales volume the dept mgr said. While I was there I looked at the Mobil 1 0w-40 I use in the Magnum, it had the ACEA A3/B3/B4 rating on it that they didn't have last week when I was in the store. I ask the guy about that and he said they recalled all the 0w-40 and replaced it with new Mobil 1 0w-40 oil, said he was told it was improperly labeled.

Got to drive the CRD today and it sure is fun to drive in town for an SUV, although not as much fun as my Magnum with Flowmaster 50 exhaust system.
