I just got my Innovate LM-1 Wideband tuner in today and wanted to test it on something. The KJ looked like a good candidate! Unfortunately there's no exciting news here. From 6" up the tail pipe the reading was 14.7 stoichiometric which is ideal for economy. This sensor position can sometimes read slightly lean though. Under wide open throttle it went as rich as 13.2. Interestingly there was quite a delay in the fuel delivery from the moment of 100% Throttle. I've always felt the delay then acceleration comes in, but now I know it's because the engine is not getting fuel as soon as you push the accelerator. Compare this with my 68 Ford Torino which immediately goes 13 to 12 range (Ideal for performance). I'll test my 2005 F150 when I get a chance. When I get the proper adapter for my computer I think I can post the graph. (If anyone cares)

That's pretty cool info...good to know. So now that we have this information, is there a cheap and reliable way to change that fact?

TPS...Throttle Position Sensor. Probably delaying the fuel delivery. I know on the older Cherokees they could "turn" it like a distributor and adjust the delay.

Check out threads at JeepsUnlimited.com in the cherokee section.

Could you go in detail about how the sensor for the wideband kit is wired up?

The LM-1 is a portable unit so it very easy to hook up if all you want to see is the A/F ratio. Plug it in to the cigarette lighter socket for power and run the other cable with the oxygen out the back glass and up the tail pipe. Clamp it really good and your ready to read A/F ratios. They sell a special clamp for this buts $70, a simple spring clamp works fine for me. Another way to is to weld an O2 bung into your exhaust if you want a more permanent solution. Hooking up the RPM converter is a little more complicated but I'm not going to use it on the KJ. You can connect to a laptop and see it real time or look up a previous sample. You can use just about any sensor on the engine to give you information and it will incorporate that into the graph. So you can see the relationship between throttle position, a/f ratio, rpm and whatever else is important to you.

check it out, lots of good stuff if youre into knowing how your engine is running. I actuallly bought this thing to tune my brother-in-laws new car. Its a 93 Toyota MR2 turbo that has been HEAVILY modified and he knows very little about cars. Now he thinks he is going to drive this race car on a daily basis. Unfortunately I am the only one for miles and miles that has real experience with heavily modified turbo import engines and won't charge $1700+ as he was quoted to fix the problem it has. Yeah, he blew it up in the first week!

Someday when I can get back to my 48 CJ2A turbo project I will use it to tune the old flat head.[/list]
