So for Camp Jeep I need a "rear tow point". Would attaching my tow strap around the pin in my reciever count? (I would think it's OK, but there I go thinking again :) ) I can't seem to find a place in Dayton to buy a rear tow ring.... Any of you guys in Chicagoland know a place I could stop buy one on Wednesday morning?

Not sure if Camp Jeep would count the reciever pin but it has been used with no issues on my end. Of course a shackle would be way better.

Tractor Supply has at least one Warn hitch mounted shackle. You should know where its at. They are open until 8.

If you can wait for shipping, there's a place you can get one for $22 shipped

I dont know about camp jeep but on the local jeepjambo we dont allow the use of shackles at all so that would be out
I have been looking for the book that they send out with the packet when you register for a jambo but cant find it ,it has alot of good info on vehical recovory do's and don'ts and shackles are on the don'ts list
we have never had a problem with a pin but have had shackle problems
I dont use a pin but rather I use the loop and thread the strap through around the hich with a good size stick between the hich and the strap so that after the pull I can get the strap off easy but I can pull as hard as I want and the only thing to break is the strap
If the stick thing is hard to follow I could post a pic.
I can also show you how to atache to straps togeather with out a shacle and with out the straps gitting stuck

I'm interested in what problems you have had with shackles. They are used in every form of heavy lifting or hauling, from ships to large carne operations.

as per your request

I used the pink net for 2 reasons
1 it was easy to get to
2 it contrast with the strap better than the 2 foot long pcs of mall handle that I use to do this
no you cannot do this if you need to get a "running" start but you are not susposed to do that either
I will never use something other than this method to join 2 straps because the pcs of wood will have far less energy than a shackle should 1 of the 2 straps break and most of the time I try to use my straps ,I carry 3, because I know that I take care of my stuff but I dont know what somebody else does with theres

Idk about that method jason. Why couldnt you just run on of the straps back though the loop?

I also use the pin in the hitch. Ive pulled many things jerking, getting run and goes, its never let me down.

I use my pin and the local trails I go too have never said anything about it. I usually hook up my strap before I go on the first trail. Sucks when you can't hook up when your stuck because the hitch is blow the mud and water line. I've never had an issue. I guess if you really were worried about it you could use a grade 8 bolt and bolt it in place on the pin.

If by I d k you mean I dont know then referance the Mark A Smith guid to common sence off road driving ,I think thats what it's called, this is the method they use and I have used it several times even to the point I dug a "windsheild wiper hole" 3" down in hard dry dirt ,had all 4 smoking
I dont mind the hich pin thing but I prefer the loop thing besides on my TJ I have a class 2 hich wich the strap will not fit in

No, I mean the stick thing. I had never thought about the pin getting bent and staying in there. That would suck majar bad.

What were you saying about a windshield wiper hole?

the stick between the hich and the strap?
thats easy thread your strap around the main body of the hich then put any old stick on the trail that aint rotten in the loop with the hich and pull the strap tight when you pull it will get tight but the stick for some reason will make it so you can get it out by stick I mean something about the size of a hammer handle

the windsheild wiper hole
look at the mark your windshield wippers make now picture a huge YJ on 36's stuck in a deep creek ,over the tires, and a little TJ on 30's trying to pull him out with no luck but much determination
to this day I dont know what made my jeep go left too right like it did and have not been able to duplicate it but it looked way cool when I moved
