Something unusual has happened on about four different occasions with my brakes. The short story is that all four wheel calipers seem to stay partially engaged, not where that it will stop the vehicle but to the point that, if I drive more that about a mile, I feel the brakes rotors begin to warp. I couldn't figure it out the first time but I did notice more rolling resistance as I accelerated. Finally, on about the second time it happened, I stopped, got out and felt of the wheels (all four) and each was too hot to keep your hand on it. I let the whole thing cool down and continued on and had no more trouble on that trip. But again, this has occured on 4 different occasions. I haven't been able to observe any commonality with the incidences. I have had it in to the 5Star group for the past 2 days and they apparently can't chase down the problem as yet. They have kept it though as they consider this a safety hazzard. I had an early Dodge diesel that the factory used composite pistons in the calipers and they would routinely wear out the rotors/pads due to drag until I rebuilt the calipers with steel pistons. The problem went away. Any thoughts, experiences or suggestions?

Thanks

Doug

I had this happen to me and when I took it to my dealership they said it was a common problem. They replaced the rubber rear brake lines and the pads because they said that they had callasped and wasn't letting the oil go back. That was about 5,000 miles ago and no problems since.

Last time I saw bad brake hoses was on an 87 Plymouth Sundance with over 100k on the clock. Sounds like this is happening way to early in the life of a liberrty.

I should have searched the forums before I posted as this problems do not seem to be that
rare. This dealership appears to be struggling with the diagnosis. If this is caused by collapsing brake lines, that seem to be 1)very early on in the life of the vehicle {'05 w/ 24K mi.} and 2) affecting all four of my calipers at the same time. Hopefully it will get sorted out but it appears to be a systemic problem with these critters. Thanks for the insight.

This isn't the same problem, but possibly related. My 06 Ltd CRD has 6500 miles on it. Since it was new and continuing to today I hear the brakes rubbing for the first minute or so of driving the Jeep, "cold". Of course, "cold" is a relative concept in South Florida. After a few minutes or using the brakes a few times (whichever takes longer) the noise goes away.

My brakes were never 100% untill finally (after 30K miles) they ALL locked up on the highway, then after 15 minuate cool down they worked fine. It started with the right rear, then progessed from their. The tech had a DCX doc state the master cylinder was failing.

They replaced the Mcylinder - so far so good

I have the same problem as KenJennings. If I don't drive mine for a few days the front brakes will make a very loud grinding noise for about the first mile and then it stops. I took it to the dealer and they said there is no problem. I disagree - I did'nt buy a brand new car so I could drive down the street with all the neighbors looking at me weird because my vehicle is making a loud grinding noise.

After 25000 miles on this set of OEM brake pads one of the pads has separated from the backing plate and is rattling around when I drive, it's just like having a baseball card in my spokes :?

Well, the saga continues. They have reportedly put the third tech on my brake issue. No resolution as yet. Clearly this is a warranty issue with my milage and age of the vehicle but it makes me want to go get the jeep and either rebuild the calipers myself and replace the master cylinder or take to a credible mechanic. Just frustration talking as I feel that this problem is getting shuttled down the pipeline based on recalls, and straight forward issues for the production based techs. Still no diagnosis or resolution.

If all four are engaging like that, I doubt it is the brake lines. Maybe the Master Cylinder or a misadjusted parking brake.

As an update on the brakes/wheels hot, DC has talked with the local service manager and has tentatively identified a possible problem. It seems that the brake booster on some of these vehicles heats and puts pressure on the piston thus increasing the brake drag. That would be consistant with what I am seeing/experiencing as this has happened on very hot days, usually after I have driven the vehicle, let it sit for 1-2 hrs. and gotten back in and driven it again, then having it begin to drag the brake system. The working hypothesis is that the brake system including the booster begins to heat soak between driving episodes and with high ambient temperatures, can't bleed off the heat fast enough and the booster begins to exert pressure on the master cylinder piston. What exactly is happening in the booster, I don't know. As an aside, the local Service Manager has been great to work with and has tried to facilitate getting to an end game with DC. DC indicated that the definitive test for the hypothesis is to loosen the bolts mounting the master cylinder and if the problem resolves, that should indicate that the booster is the problem. The manager is ordering a brake booster so that they can replace the original next week. This may be odd enough that others may not experience it but thought that I would get it into the forum for the good of the cause.
