anyone see one tagged yet for ULSD ? my guess is probably not as they'll have to dilute the tanks of the LSD first to get it under the 15ppm requirement ...

Also anyone have plans to add (more) lubricant if not using Bio when ULSD becomes more common?

Down here in sulphur, LA there are 2 stations with ULSD and 3 with LSD. There is no need for extra lubricity additives because the refineries are required to meet the lubricity requirments.

So far the ULSD is only about 4 cents more that LSD. One thing to report is that i actually achieved 27 mpg with my second tank of ULSD...our previous best was 24 mpg.

In Dover, DE there is a station that sells ULSD for the same as all the other stations in town. I buy from there all the time. Car runs great with it and I've been told by people following me that I don't release any puffs (even though the puffs I made on the old stuff was minimal). My mileage is still in the 28s on the highway.

All of the pumps where I live are still LSD but stickers are starting to appear on them. The stickers basically say that if you have a 2007 diesel not to use the fuel.

Same thing here in Indianapolis, IN.

Most of the diesel pumps around my area have been tagged as "Low Sulfur Highway Diesel. Maximum Sulfur Content 500ppm. Do not use in 2007 or newer vehicles."

USLD is not available yet at any of the stations I've patronized.

We DO have bio here in NC. Check the retailer map at www.biodiesel.org , several places scattered across the state. In particular, one large truck stop on I-40 about 8 miles west of where it crosses I-77. Largest concentration seems to be in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area.

I just took a long camping trip to MO this past weekend and filled at a local truckstop before leaving (Mr. Fuel). I noticed for the first time that the fuel was almost clear....no color and had almost no odor at all. Same thing when I filled up in Missouri. This must be the new fuel?

As for mileage with it, I can't really say how it's doing yet. I got between 18 and 20 mpg, but I was towing a camper and doing about 75 most of the way. I was more worried about getting through that vast expanse of flat, boring land as fast as possible....I think they call it "Illinois". :D

I haven't seen any ULSD here. But then again...

I hardly ever need to visit the pump now.

I passed by the I-40 stop you mentioned, as it turned out my check engine light came on (egr codes) shortly after passing through so I would have wondereded (incorrectly) if the fuel caused the problem.

I have not seen the first pump labeled ULSD here in Miami.

Just got my first tank of ULSD in Wilmington, Del. Seems to be running the same as before, same mpg, etc. Glad to see it has arrived. I worry a bit more about putting it in my 1987 car, based on things I've heard about IP and lubrication, etc., but I'm starting to hear from a lot of people with the same car that it runs just fine on ULSD. The Jeep has certainly done fine with it.

As for BIO, I have heard that there might be some in Del soon ... I know we're getting a biodiesel plant, although that does not always mean the fuel will be sold here. I'm not ready to run it yet, anyway, but it would be nice to know that option is on the horizon.

The ULSD lubricity standard in the US calls for a maximum wear scar of 520 microns. The lubricity additive is blended with the fuel at the terminals - not the refinery. This could be something as simple as the delivey driver pouring the additive into the tank at the gas station. Europe's ULSD lubricity requirement calls for a max wear scar of 460 microns. I'll keep using the additive as cheap insurance against low lubricity along with keeping the injectors clean.

From Chevron's Web Site

Quote:
Introduction of the new 15ppm diesel into different portions of the diesel fuel supply channel will be managed through staggered compliance dates. For North America, there are currently three S15 (ULSD) implementation timelines.

United States (except California)

On-Highway Diesel Fuel
Refinery < 15ppm by June 1, 2006
Terminal < 15ppm by September 1, 2006
Retail < 15ppm by October 15, 2006
Off-Road / Locomotive & Marine Fuel < 500ppm by June 1, 2007

Me as well. I like using additive for more than just the lubricity feature. Water is a killer in a diesel engine and there are good additives that, not only add lubricity, but help take care of any water in fuel, keep fuel system and injectors cleaner, prevent gelling in cold weather, and increase the cetane.

Unfortunately, a lot of stations do not tightly control the environment in which diesel is stored or, in the case of small "auto diesel" only type of operations, don't monitor the filters at the pump if they even have them installed. This is becomming more of an issue with even the heavy diesel engines. I can recall that one station I delivered fuel to regularly, had a problem with ground water getting into the tanks. I once removed 8" of water from one tank.

The above ground tanks suffer from constant heating/cooling and therefore a condensation problem if not monitored. Even the high volume truck stops encounter these issues. They are not frequent, but they do occur. Then there is alway the bacteria problem that can occur.

A good additive, such as Power Service or Howe's Lubricator, will usually keep these problems from being a real issue. They are cost effective and they work. Some think it is not necessary, and that is ok. I, on the other hand, find them good insurance in my farm equipment, semi's, and my CRD.

Hey does anyone know a good web-site to use to determine where there are gas stations that sell diesel fuel by entering a zip code? Jeep has one on their web site, but when you type in the zip code to the diesel fuel station finder, it just shows a yahoo map of that particular city/region and no actual gas station locations. thanks.

http://autos.msn.com/everyday/gasstations.aspx

Enter your zip code and it shows you a map with the locations of gas stations around you. Below that is a list of last known prices of fuel at each station and when the prices were last updated for the web site. The lists includes prices for unleaded, plus, premium, and diesel and is sorted by the uleaded prices. There doesn't appear to be a way to change that. Click on the Feedback button at the bottom of the page and tell them they should allow sorting by diesel prices.
