With rising fuel prices, I've been thinking of converting my KJ to propane (or to run either/or). Has anyone done this? Are there any kits available? Is it worth it? Any response is welcomed.

Jared

Boooommmmm!

No. Seriously this form of energy is right behind Gas and Diesel. I'm not really familiar with it, but after browsing the web about it I am impressed with how clean it is, and it is very competitive with $$$ against gas/diesel.

Propane has less power per gallon than gasoline. We down rate gensets about 6 to 10% that run on propane. You save money because your not paying road taxes, other than that you won't save much. Propane runs very clean, you'll never have dirty lube oil on a propane rig. If things aren't functioning right you'll have a few more steps to go thru during troubleshooting. The problem that occurs with me the most is faulty fuel pressure regulators, many time you just have to pull them apart and clean out some garlic oil residue, other times the regulator is toast and you have to replace it. Keep a spare around to make sure you can "getter done" when you need it. It's not difficult to change unless you hide it someplace.

A gasser can be converted to run on propane. On a diesel, propane injection is similar to nitrous on a gasser.

You folks better get everything you own off of natural gas and propane both as soon as possible!!! With the advent of fuel cell technology and Power Co's buying up gas companies...The price is rising at a crazy rate. It will do you well to invest in natural gas stocks!!!!!

For the last two years the cost has doubled to heat a house on gas and this years increase will be incredible.

Ah ... but ... when propane tank blows up the result is far, far from pretty. All that's left of you are little bits and pieces.

Something must make it blow up though. Unless someone really doesnt like you, it should be fine. The schwan's truck that delivers food to our house runs on propane. I used to talk to him about it all the time. He talked about how clean they run and how they never change the oil. It had HUGE tanks on it though.

My neighbor converted his GMC Sierra to propane. It has done nothing but created problems. Its not trusted for long trips and its only a few years old. Plus, propane is expensive as well now. My opinion is stay away from that conversion.

Check out converting to E85 if it's available in your area. I'm looking at converting my 4.0L TJ when they get the E85 pumps in my area. They have been using E85 in Brazil for years. It really not that hard and DON’T listen to all the folks that say you can’t. Do your research. The Oil companies have been spreading false rumors about E85 for years and the Auto companies want you to think your hurting your vehicle so they can sell you a new car.

In the UK LPG (liquid petroleum gas) is less than half the price of petrol. There are a lot converted Jeeps over here and I have never heard of one blowing up. If multi stage injectors are fitted, I have not heard of any reliability issues either.

I have friend with a V8 WJ that's been converted to LPG and the only differences he has is that it's affordable to run, there is very small drop in power and the exhaust gas smells different.

Hey I drive a Schwan's Truck!

They run pretty well, sometimes can be a problem to start....you have to wait a few seconds to let the vaporizer run so it will start fine....

Plenty of power and yes, the oil is always very clean.

They do require a larger than average size tank and they can only be filled 80% full.
