I have a 2005 Renegade and have been wanting to put a roof rack on it. From what I have been told, the Renegade roof rack that fits over the large side rails does not fit the 2005.
The "tupperware" roof rack fits over the pre-2005 side rails, which are not larger than the normal siderails on sport and limited models. I don't believe the tupperware will fit any of the 2005+ models.

I went to the dealer and bought the utility cross bars that fit the stock side rails. I was planning on buying a basket. I just checked my owners manual and it states the roof rack on a 2005 will hold 150 lbs, while the Renegade model is only 65 lbs. I thought those big tubes were going to hold more than that. Is that why these come with the molded roof rack? and why not the 2005?
The tubes themselves can hold quite a bit more, but the crossrails are the limiting factor. If you want a lot of weight up there, I suggest returning the mopar crossrails and buying aftermarket, such as thuele or yakima, as they can support 150lbs per bar (so 300lbs total for the roof). At that point the root itself is the limiting factor, as you wouldn't want to put much more than that up there.

I wanted to keep things I am carrying off of the actual roof and paint.
Any help would be nice before I start buying more stuff.
I suggest going with aftermarket crossbars and a basket, that should hold plenty of weight for your needs.
