I need to do a front pinion seal, I ordered a shop manual but don't have it yet and have a question.

Does the front pinion use shims or a crush sleeve? Obviously it will make a difference how tight I re assemble it.

why would you need a new crush sleeve, you are not removing the pinion. You take of the nut, pop off the flange, pop the seal out, put the new one in, and torque the nut back down.

it has a turning resistance of something, not sure the spec 20 foot pounds i think.

you don't need to recrush a new seleve if you aren't taking the pinion out..replacing bearings ect.

I wouldn't, on crush sleeves you want to be careful and install the nut back where it was so the sleeve is not crushed any further. On ones that use a shim its just torque it down.

Thanks for the heads up on this so I will be careful.

I changed mine a few weeks ago. Napa had it in stock.

Before I disassembled it I checked the rotating resistance with an inch pound torque wrench. I removed the nut pulled off the yoke and then removed the seal
Then when I reassembled it I tightened the nut little by little until the resistance was the same.
