Hello,

I have a new CRD and want to run biodiesel. The two options in my area (Iowa City) are B2 and B100. I like the idea of B100, but wanted feedback. I know Chrsysler says <B5, and B20 would be a no-brainer for me. But can I expect ill effects from B100? It'd be a lot easier than trying to mix my own B20. I imagine in the cold Iowa winters I'd want to mix in petro-diesel.

Any thoughts and experiences, good or bad, from running B100 in a 2006 Jeep Liberty CRD?

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

I have run severla tanks of B20 without problems. I put about 11 gals of B99 into a tank of Dino last week and pushed a CEL about 250 miles later that I have not read yet but otherwise had no issues. Several here that run B99/B100 report harder starts and slightly reduce mileage on the down side and less engine noise on the upside. I ran my first tank of B20 in December with temps in the teens without issues but a local school bus fleet filling from the same tanks had to go back to Dino due to jelling issues.

Of course a 1/4 tank of B100 becomes B25 when mixed with 3/4 tank of Dino so mixing your own blends is not out of the question.

I run B20 the majority of the time. Just over 19k on the clock, and the only issues I've had is 3 out of 4 glow plugs replaced (all during the summer months).

I've run B99 with no problems. Typically, I blend it between B50 and B75. I've noticed that B99 runs quieter, but gets low MPGs.

I can not attest to long-term results since my Jeep is only 3 months old, but short-term has been fine.

I've been running various blends since I got my CRD in March. Started with B20 with a few B50 tanks until mid-May when I went to B99/100 through July and early August. On a long road trip I couldn't find any so used dino for 2700 mi and just went back to B20 yesterday. No problems from the biodiesel at all. I did get a questionable tank of dino in Montana that seemed to cause some tranny shudder and hard shifts.

As to winter driving, I'd suggest that you don't go over B20 and even a lower blend if you park outside. As long as it's >35-40F you're fine with a high blend. Even the distributor around here, mild Pacific Northwest, uses B50 in the winter.

I am limited to two choices for biodiesel, B20 at a pump near work or B100 from an oil supplier 30 miles out of the away so running high concentrations are not practical. I try to patronize the station with the B20 pump as much as possible eventhough their fuel is slightly more expensive. I also buy B100 in 5-gal fuel cans and splash-blend as needed. A 5-10% splash blend into even poor quality dino-diesel makes a world of difference in noise, smoothness, and black smoke. I personally like the way it runs on B15-B20 and willing to pay extra for the stuff.

One time, I had @ B75 in mine from splash blending while enroute to the fuel station. Was a bad experience as it bucked & stumbled until I topped it off with D2. I don't know what caused that (uneven blending??, cold fuel??) but it went away and I never tried that stunt again.

I have run B100 from the same supplier in Iowa City. It runs fine but starts a little harder than D2. It will stumble once or twice before sustaining an idle. I normally run between B20 and B40 blending it myself.

Running B100 in Madison, WI, on my 2005. Some hard starting, especially with a cold engine, but otherwise it's all good. I've only had it for about 2000 miles, so I guess it's a little early to say how the milage looks, but my feeling is it's a little low. Not to bad though, I'll trade < 10% milage for improved emissions, a little less noise, and the ability to grow my own if I want :)

I guess that it is kind of obvious that I run B100 (ASTM commercialstuff), and have pretty much stright for the last 6 months. Nothing to note except possible longer starts. EGR was a non-fuel issue, and some say B100 should help with future EGR stuff, but I have doubts. It might be time for a tranny check (sometimes won't go into D from R when its cold), and that isn't fuel related either.

But even an enthusiast such as I would be the first to point out: it ain't proven until it is proven and proven again. I know the risk I take and take it willingly. Be sure that you are aware that this is new territory and 10k miles is a lot different than 100k miles of proof.

I've run full tanks of B100 with no ill effects (not even hard starting). There's a place in Phoenix with really high quality bio. However, it is not always convenient to make the drive into downtown Phoenix, so I've filled several 5 gallon fuel jugs and mix about 1/2 a jug to a tank of dino. I think it's important to maintain some bio in the tank because of its cetane and its cleaning properties.

I'll chime in on my experiences as well. I've been running various blends since I bought my CRD last October. I have 18K miles on it now. It's been in for an EGR and the tranny TSBs but otherwise runs great. I do notice some hard starting on B100.

If the B100 supplier isn't far out of your way, just splash-blend to B20 or so (just fill 4-5 gallons of B100 and the rest w/ D2) and increase the percentage until your personal cost/sustainability meter reaches equilibrium. For me, D2 runs ~$3.20 and B100 is ~$3.50 so there's a definite premium on Bio. But it's worth it to me (I have a 55-gallon drum I keep in the garage and fill the Jeep from there).

Mileage difference is in the error as far as I can tell and it's definitely quieter. Wife and I were on a trip a few weeks ago and had to fill w/ D2. At the next rest stop she thought something was wrong w/ the engine as it was "making a rattly noise".

And for the winter (if you read my profile I ski a lot so am in cold weather) I run B20 (basically try to time my trip so I top off w/ D2 as I'm heading into the mountains so I get winter-blended fuel) and I add some PowerService additive. Haven't had any cold weather problems. I also give it a good 30 seconds of glow plug time even though the light is long out by then. Maybe just superstition on my part but I don't think it will hurt.

So go for it. And remember, every gallon of bio you use is one less gallon of oil we're having to pump out of somewhere.

Know a guy with an MB CDI that has been running B100 summer and B20 winter and he has about 45k miles on the car with no related problems.

I have been running B20 in my PSD for about 8 mounths, last couple tanks have been b100.
The CRD got B20 the first time we filled it (only had it 10 days).
Here (Salt Lake) B20 is 10-20 cents lower than D2, and B100 is 40-50 cents less than D2.
There are 3 stations with b20 that are not too out of the way....I see no reason to not run at least B20.
Well, except I keep getting cravings for french fries

I have about 18k on our CRD with all summer weather at B99, Spring and Fall abt B50, and winter at B20. I have only used about three tanks of petro diesel on a trip where I couldn't get bio... Started using B99 upon purchase.

I have had the EGR fail, which is not a fuel issue - in fact B99 should help reduce the issue...
