Just went past the dealer to check up on my KJ and got some info, now this is what iv been told and this is by the top DC Jeep dealer in our country so here is what they said,

As you can see from the picture below the rubber boot has been changed to a clear silicon high temperature one so they can see the grease level in side??? how long it will stay clear dont know. as you can see there is a heat shield that clips on some how, when i get my jeep back ill post that picture as well.

Image

This is the box and part number on it.

So now its a wait and see how long they last? see that manufactured date.

Looks like the same design we already have here in the States. That stupid heat shield came on my '05 Liberty and I'm still part of the recall. Matter of fact, that stupid heat shield was the Corporate answer/redesign to the first LBJ recall here in the States a few years ago.

So basically, all they did was change the color of the grease boot - not redesign the actual LBJ itself....

Awesome. Thanks for the pics. I will use the part # to instruct my dealership of the correct one so they do not try to dupe me.

Once I put the VIN# in the information comes upt but the status is "incomplete", dunno what that means?? The hyperlink didn't help either. I should keep an eye out for it I might just get a notice by mail or I'll just chek the site later. I called DC and they said even if I got the notice in hand it's going to take a few weeks to get the LBJs in, the guy siad they are expecting to be booked being that winter is on it's way and most people would like to have it done before the first snow. The waiting game begins...

Mine had the clear boot and heat sheild on a 2003...I don't think this is the "new" part. If it is then don't bother and get Moogs...

I do agree with you on this point, its basically what i was told is all they trying to do is stop the heat making it go brittle and cracking, the cracks are small 'so they say' and its when you off road the up and down movment opens them up and lets the dust or mud in? I cant see that heat shield staying on, hit a puddle of water at speed and its off! I guess that was there first attempted at fixing it and now they have changed the rubber?

Id say Skyjump136 is rite!

If kolesy comes rite With DC with the reimbursement then thats the way to go! Run out and buy moogs and get the money back from DC!

When these are worm out ill just replace them with moogs.

And whoever told you that is full to the eyeballs with oozing crud, because there are numerous incidents of the ball joints failing on jeeps that have NEVER been off-road. If this is DC's answer then I would think it's time for Moogs, but I'll wait until I have a chance to see what they are putting into the Jeeps here in the states before I go that route. So if anyone who has an appointment set already can get some info/pics for teh rest of us I'm sure they would be GREATLY appreciated!

As for the heat shields, mine are still on after some pretty good water-fording...

Just how hot does it get down there? I am skeptical that the heat is even causing the problem. I have felt the little heat shield ball joint areay after some pretty long stop and go sessions and that area was never really that hot. Maybe it just cools off quickly? Or I dont know what hot is.

Whats the advantage/disadvantage of GREASABLE ball joints versus non-greasable?

One hypothesis is that with all the added pressure from the poor placement of the LBJ on the knuckle that the limited grease in the joint is prematurely depleted. This creates friction and heat which allows the LBJ to basically eat itself. The aftermarket MOOGs are not only greasable but are supposedly of a higher build quality as well. I know they feel solid under my rig. Screw the recall. Get some MOOGs and worry no more.

Being able to add grease means that you can be sure that the joint is lubricated properly. Adding grease regularly will also help to keep dirt/grime/foreign material out of the joint; when you add grease it pushes out from the zerk and forces the older grease to the outside of the joint, carrying all that other nasty stuff with it. I would say the one main disadvantage (to some) is that you have to maintain them, which means spending time getting dirty and sweaty. Just think of having greasable joints as another small way you can spend quality time with your beloved Jeep 8)

Mine is scheduled for the recall work to be done Monday morning...will let you know what happens.

I have a feeling it will be the same as the last "recall" where some people get new ball joints but most are just "inspected" for wear and nothing is done...

They can try to sell me on the 'inspection' but it ain't a-gonna happen :P Either they replace the dern things or I raise a stink, and I just had a WHOLE bunch of beans for supper so it will be a bad one  The way I see it, DC has admitted that the current units are bad, and since mine has the current ones, they WILL be replaced!

I would call them again, tell them that you have failing ball joints and need an appointment NOW! Also mention that you are seeing the notification when you run your VIN on the jeep.com website. As I told someone in another post, do NOT take 'NO' for an answer. Myself, I am not as concerned as I checked mine recently and had no play, but since you do have play it is a safety concern.

wow and i thought my dealer sucked........... but all they did to me was put me on hold and then hung up!!! but i called again and i have an appointment for next friday.

they said its gonna take half a day to do this, thats a little crazy since u can put in a whole lift in about 3/4 of a day. What is the part number for the new LBJ and where would i be able to find it? Just trying to make sure they don't put the old ones on it.
