FYI...

The "new" lower ball joint is different colored and thus it should be easy to tell if you got the updated version. The old ones have a yellow band and clear/yellow boot. The new ones have a blue band and grey boot. Here's a pic...

Our 06 CRD has those exact ball joints from the factory, as far as I can tell there is no difference. Build date 05-06.

jeep started using the new ball joints in march/april 06. so you should have the updated versions! that is why they are the same.

I'd rather have greasable Moogs, but I can't argue with FREE...even if they only last another 30,000 miles then that buys some time before I have to shell out the $$$ for Moogs. And hey, there's a slight chance these might actually be better than the original...I'm willing to give it a go.

Does anybody have a DC part number please?

Gotta check w/ the dealerships if they have them in stock.

I read some of the do it yourself info but how hard is it for these dealerships to do this job ie. if they assign it to the newbie fVckt@rd service tech, how much damage can they do. I think they just put a boot on it last time and claimed to DC that they replaced it.

Is a wheel alignment a part of this protocol?

I gotta believe that after all the recalls todate, they would know this procedure well...

Thanks Milous. One thing I notice in looking thru this recall information is that it does not appear that they are including an alignment. From the linked PDF:

Service Procedure (Continued)
32. Repeat Steps 2 through 31 to replace the ball joint on the other side of the
vehicle and then continue with Step 33.
33. Install the right and left side wheel and tire assembly. Tighten the lug nuts to
100 ft. lbs. (135 N⋅m).
34. Lower the vehicle from the hoist.
35. Pump the brake pedal several times before moving the vehicle.
36. Return the vehicle to the customer.

If the work is done properly is an alignment nescessary? Just curious. I plan on getting mine done in a couple of weeks.

You'd think you'd need an alignment. I'm getting one for sure after I install MOOG LBJs.

I looked in the service manual and a ball joint replacement calls for a front end alignment.

I'm pretty sure those are the ones I looked at since I was thinking I'd have to do it soon (before the recall)...I'll check again tonight (at home) but I'm pretty sure. I'm printing it out and taking it with me.

The part number used on my 04 was CBXEF230 (that was on the invoice).

Just got mine done. Had 37k on the rig and I noticed the steering seems a little more firm/tight then before. I didn't call them at all. They called me on a thursday and said parts were in for my Liberty and wanted me to come in at 9am the next day. While it was in the shop, was "networking" with my orig salesman. He remembered me since I was one of the only 2 timberline green jeeps his dealer sold in my area of Roseville Mi. Looks like after crunching some numbers on a couple minivans, I'll be turning the KJ in and leaving a T&C. Just wished DCX offered AWD in it's minivans but they stopped.

I dunno if they'll be able to get past step 9 for most of us!

Hmm, vehicle ride height seems off. I'd better fix it!

I'm getting mine done tomorrow afternoon. I'm gonna ask the guy if he'll let me take a look at the old LBJ's... I guess after hearing all the horror stories about the way stealerships treat their customers I'm a little paranoid. The guy said an alignment is included too.
