I still think that there are several reasons why there is some people who just can't get over 23/24 mpg as well as some who can't get past 27/28 mpg.
1. Quality of fuel. I use a B2/B5 mix of 49 Cetane fuel, while most only have access to 40/42 cetane fuel. A 40/42 cetane fuel with 20% biodiesel will only be about 44/45 cetane max, and it will most assuredly lower mpg compared to what I use.
2. Driving styles. It is hard to believe how much this effects this vehicle. Driving 75/80 mph in this vehicle will drop you mpg's like a rock. at 65/70 I can get low to mid 30 mpg's, but 75/80 drops me into the 24/27 mpg range. Excessive use of the torque in town (it's so much fun) can drop us from 22/23 mpg to 17/18 mpg. I have been guilty of doing this, it is more fun to hotrod then my Magnum. I drive more for mpg when driving the CRD on the highway, the Magnum I just fly low and don't worry about cost or mpg's as the car is so much fun and comfortable at the same time.
3. Injector timing is off from the factory and needs to be reset. This also can knock the mpg's in the head and effect overall preformance, including 0>60 time as well as mpg's.
I have to agree totally with 1+2. From my experience with every diesel vehicle I have driven, both hold very true. In my PSD I consistantly got 1-2mpg better from supplier A than I do supplier B. Winter fuel (additives) here really kill milage aswell. As for #2, It is so hard for me to drive mellow in any turbo diesel....they are just so dang fun!
Also, #3 seems to be a pretty consistant issue in most diesels too. Almost all but the most extreme re-programs will show some milage increase. Again my best point of refference is the PSD world....I have 6 dif programs in mine from econ to all out stupid. My 5th=extreme/race will yeild the best milage, even better then the econ program
IF I can keep my foot out of it.
Looking at some programming for the CRD, but I want to break it in first so I can get a true feel for improvements....
