At the track and on the dyno. It's surprisingly smooth at those speeds, but it's too dangerous to try to sustain. It's way too dangerous to do on the roads.

This is killing me, I'm rofling.

I had this same inquiry last weekend so I tested it on a huge strech of open highway.

And I took video too.

I have 265-70-16 tires on my 16X8 rims
A magnaflow and a K&N filter in the stock box.

I got to about 98 MPH(about 105 after calculations) and stayed there at 4200 RPM for about half a mile, This lib seemed to be going strong and then just stopped accelerating. Didn't slow down at all, just held steady there.

While stock before I hit 110. I'll be stock again soon so I can try a direct comparison and post video of both.

It cant be a speed limiter, because my tires cause the speedometer (and odometer) to be 5-6% of on the low side.

I think it is a result of either a rev limiter in the final gear, or various calculations carried out by the computer and then limited accordingly.

Somebody want to ask the dealer?

115mph racing a Renegade on the NJ Parkway. It handled fine. Then again racing a Mercedes on RT 9 N did a 0-110-0 in about 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile. Fastes I have ever gone was 150mph on a Kawasaki ZX-9, then 140mph on a 03 Suzuki GSX-R1000. Fastest in my Nissan 300zx was 130mph for 4 miles racing a 240sx on rt-18.

Valid points about safety.

If you can't hit the limiter in any mile of space, you just are not trying. That little bit o' fun was on i-70 between us 68 and I-675 at about 2 am. That is the same stretch where wondering what a deer/harley collison at 115 would look like prompted me to roll of the throttle a bit.

Seriously, flying down a deserted stretch of interstate is far less dangerous than, say, puttin a straw in your mickey d's cup at 45 mph. But we do that stuff ( or talk on a cell phone, or yell at the kids) all of the time and never consider it dangerous.

Given the number of idiots on the road, I consider it dangerous Every time I get in my car. Funny how much I am paying attention to safe driving these days.....I am in the middle of teaching my 15.5 yr old son safe driving for his permit/license. It is amazing how the idiots show up as soon as a new driver is behind the wheel. He is amazed at the lack of respect and total stupidity he sees from other drivers just trying to drive across town. ...... oooppps..just fell of my box.....STFU for me now. Probably wasting my breath anyhow.

Where do you guys go to get so fast (in the 100s)? I could only even think about that speed on the highway, which is usually swarming with the state patrol  The backroads here scare me in the Liberty at 80 mph, even before I got a lift or m/t tires.

:!: Someone should put a V8 in a KJ. 5.9L out of an ZJ, anyone?

The only place I've ever seen where I'd probably only kill myself and not someone else (if a tire blew out or something) is back when I lived in Phoenix, AZ about 15 or 20 years ago. If you go way out west past Sun City there are roads in the desert that are dead flat for 50 miles with no intersections, no homes, no significant possibility of anyone entering the road from the side and the pavement is pristine.

Back when I was a stupid teenager, my friend and I took his new at the time Mitsubishi 3000GT (non-turbo, but Z-Rated tires) out there and pushed it to 155mph. The last 10mph took many minutes to achieve.

Out here in the Midwest it's way too risky for other people.

No JJ, it's not wasted :) You're doing right by teaching your kids. I've had many near collisions with others (no fault of mine) over the years and defensive driving is going to be at the top of the list when it comes time to teach my kid to drive (oh, in 12 years or so).

I still think it's valid to "get to know what you drive". It may be something as simple as getting in a go-kart and hit the slick tracks to get the feel for loss of traction conditions.

The KJ is the first car I never have driven at top speed, did 90 while overtaking an idiot once who put his right foot down when I was passing him.
The KJ felt more stable at 90 than the Range Rover I occasional drive, but it is not a sports car either.
I used to drive in Germany alot, there is no speed limit and You could drive 400 Miles in about 3 Hours(early Sunday mornings) and it was fun to overtake police patrol cars doing 140mph in your Golf V5.

I'm use to speeding and i think you are more attuned to whats going on around you going that fast. Granted you should always becareful in traffic and other oncoming cars. But if theres a straight away on the highway watch out with no cars around. I use to have a Ford SHO (Super High Output) and would get up to about 138 like nothing on the highway, it was built for that top end speed though. My BMW enjoys it also going over 120mph as well as my motor cycle. I don't enjoy going that fast in the KJ though, knowing the way it handles and the awful breaking. Third, I have a baby now and it has totally changed my driving habits. I never speed with her in the car and usually dont when i have the empty car seat in the back..It's grow up time for Daddy-O!!

Please stay away from me and my KJ when you do stupid stuff in your KJ.....or in any other vehicle. We see, far too often, people getting killed due to excessive speed.....and the innocent that get killed or seriously injured due to stupid idiots. Many times, teens do this and hit a curve and can't control the vehicle, running off the road, flipping and/or hitting a tree.

As adults, we should be responsible enough to do this only in controlled areas (race track). Perhaps at worst, a wide open stretch of flat highway in the middle of nowhere with nobody around (New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada) where there are no driveways, front yards, or forests near the road where animals can jump out in front of you at the last second.

I drive over the speed limit but rarely more than 5 mph (over the limit)when another person is in my KJ. I will drive fast (when alone in my KJ) and push it no more than 10 mph over limit.

Off my box.

The first 2 or 4 times - OK. I think we get the picture that we have a strong following of folks who are looking out for our safety (and their own) and want us to slow down. Point taken, I'll keep it under 100 (except for maybe once in Wyoming or Utah next spring); however the original topic in this thread was about the theoretical or practical top end of a KJ and if it was computer limited. Seems like it's been answerd as in the 110-115 range with computer limiting. Besides, I was just having a little fun with all the offtopic posts :)

If I had a vehicle that could hit 200, you can bet your booty I'll find a road wide enough, long enough and empty enough to top it out.

I topped the KJ out on a 4 lane highway, at 3 AM, with about 5 miles of straight road and 1 car behind me.

Speeding is not automatically stupid. *Some* people are stupid. Speed limits are meant to protect normal people from stupid people.

Like mentioned already, in germany you can cruise w/e speed you want. Are you saying all germans are stupid? You are just victim to the common assumptions that all laws are universally true instead of being based on situational ethics.

(The above statement does not apply to teenagers as they are substantially stupider than human comprehension can even begin to grasp)

*Jumps off his soap box and kicks it over to moose.*

*Moose kicks it back and a game of soapbox soccer begins*

*Just then a renegade KJ (note pun) comes barreling through the soccer field at 109.5 MPH, killing Miah and breaking the soapbox*

I warn you, I'm not a fast fullback, but I do believe in physical football. Since you were on your back when it happened, the driver did not have time to see you. (as it was, I made sure to kick the box prior to getting your knee  )

It is a ballance of situational ethics and laws; and I wont go into the "speeding tickets are mearly a tax for being in a hurry" argument, because that would get several more pages of posts as off topic as these have been. Someone should start a thread about safe driving to take this further....

No victim here. I never said anything about stupid and different speed limits. I just said "stupid things." That can be many things like:

1. Having an arguement while talking on a cell phone while driving
2. Eating and being more attentive to eating, while driving
3. Putting on makeup while driving
4. Drinking and spilling HOT coffee or other beverage while driving
5. smoking and dropping the cig/cigar or hot ash on your lap or between your legs as you drive.
6. Drinking and driving
7. Trying to have sex while driving...........or being parked (thoughts of the movie "World According to Garp" comes to mind) - if you don't know, rent it. hahaha!
8. driving while very fatigued (up there with drunk driving)
9. Driving slow in the passing lane during rush hour (non-traffic jam)
10. etc
11. etc
12. etc

Regarding Germans - The Autobahn is designed a thousand times better than any road/highway in the USA. People have the choice to speed and people do die there because of the really high speeds. Getting on that highway is a choice. You know in advance that there is no speed limit. You accept the risk. In the USA, there are speed limits, bad roads, and higher risk of living creatures that can wander into your path. Speed limits are not meant for protecting normal people from stupid people. They are there to protect all people.

I'm not perfect. I don't believe the statements that says "speed kills" or "Be a Defensive driver." Stupidity kills and defenders in the NFL hit people while offense avoids being hit.
