I want to make sure I am looking at the right thing. The SM says in the fluids are:
Front 186FIA Mopar 80w90
Rear 8 1/4 Mopar Gear Lube 75w-90

I've got 25000 miles and it was due 1000 miles ago. I've never done this before and the service manual doesn't really say anything about changing the fluid. It shows me how to take it all apart. Not that I would ever need to that. I think :P Thanks for your help.

Looks like you got it. IF towing heavy loads often, you might want to move to a 75w-140 for the rear. Don't forget the additive if you have a factory posi rear, "Trac-Lock".

There have been a lot of posts on this, and it's been shown that the specifications have not been consistent from year to year, or consistent from the owners manual to the service manual in the same year.

Here is what you have from the '05 Service Manual:
AXLE
NOTE: DaimlerChrysler recommends using Mopar
lubricants or lubricants of equal quality.
FRONT AXLE
² 186FIA (Model 30) - Mopar Lubricant 80W-90
REAR AXLE
² 8 1/4 - Mopar Gear Lubricant 75W-90 (Trailer
Towing - Mopar Synthentic Gear Lubricant 75W-140
NOTE: Trac-lok equipped axles require 118 ml (4
ounces) of Limited Slip Additive be added to the
lubricant.

Here is what the '02 Service Manual has :

DESCRIPTION - AXLE
A multi-purpose, hypoid gear lubricant which conforms
to MIL-L-2105C and API GL 5 quality specifications
should be used. Mopar Hypoid Gear
Lubricants conforms to these specifications.
FRONT AXLE
² Lubricant for 186FIA (Model 30) axle is SAE
75W-140 SYNTHETIC.

REAR AXLE
² Lubricant for 198RBI (Model 35) axle is SAE
75W-140 SYNTHETIC.
² Lubricant for 8 1/4 axle is a thermally stable
SAE 75W-90. For trailer tow or heavy duty applications
the lubricant should be replaced with SAE
75W-140 SYNTHETIC.
NOTE: Trac-lokT equipped axles require a friction
modifier be added to the lubricant.
CAUTION: If axle is submerged in water, lubricant
must be replaced immediately to avoid possible
premature axle failure.

Just ... interesting... I have RedLine 80W140 in the front and Schaeffer 75W90 in the rear. I added some friction modifier at the rear, but not a full dose--maybe 2 oz. Try it and see.

As for the procedure. THe front is a piece of cake because there is a drain plug. I forget what it takes -- Maybe a 10mm hex. Loosen the fill plug first, to be certain you'll be able to refill after it's drained.

At the rear, you'll be removing the cover. If it hasn't been off, it will need some persuasion. If the vehicle is pointed uphill it may be easier to get more to drain out. You'll be scooping it out with your hand anyway if you are thorough. Some spray a brake cleaner solvent around, but I don't. Careful of sharp edges.

Going back I use a gasket. The first time, I had leaks with RTV 3 times before I gave it up and made a gasket. Not sure why. on my Ford, I used RTV without a problem. If I were going with RTV, I'd try Permatex's The Right Stuff. Not a problem finding a gasket listed for liberties now... it's a FelPro RDS 55047. The gasket was always out there, for other 8.25 applications, but I didn't think about that-- hence, why I made one....

I was wondering how you get the fill plug out in the front and rear? I am just concerned about damaging the plugs.

My front fill plug is a square plug that I can put a socket extension straight into...also, I do my rear by using a suction gun with a flexible tube. I don't remove the cover and clean it out, but then again, I don't go underwater, etc. with it.

75W-140 SYNTHETIC is what the manual recommends for the front diff, i think.

I used 80w90 though, no problems.... i do change it often though.

Chetos-

Yes it is. I got it at autozone for like $10-12 and have used it several times on two jeeps. It's worked fine for me. I can do both KJ diffs in about an hour and that's taking my time.

I had used Mobil 1 when I installed my Powertrax. It did not work well for me. I switched to cheap Murrays brand and now going to AMSOIL.
