I have an intermittent, mild grinding noise on the KJ that I am having trouble diagnosing.

It only occurs when shifting into reverse. It is definitely a metal on metal type of thing versus the pinch weld catching kind of sound.

If I hold in on the brakes until the transmission does its little automatic quarter turn upon shifting, and then begin letting the jeep roll back, the sound often never manifests itself.

If I let the jeep begin rolling backwards immediatly after shifting into reverse, I get the grinding at least 75% of the time.

I had a thought that my skid plates may be contacting something, but I am not convinced that is it.

Anyone have any ideas what to check out under the jeep? I'd like to figure it out before I head down to Land Between the Lakes early next month.

Thanks in advance!!

Sounds like the rear brake moan syndrome, there is a new tsb to correct the problem if that is what the noise is,

Just got finished dropping all my skid plates (Mopar engine and trans skids and All J Superskid II). Took it for a test drive, playing with going from park to reverse a lot and the sound is gone.

I didn't install the spacers All J provides becuase when I installed there was plenty of clearance. I must have bent the skid just enough to let something touch in certain situations. I did high center on the skid last time I went offroad.

Huge weight off my back!
