O.N. - good food for thought... I think your slowly turning me into a believer...

I've read the EHM directions up in the Sticky thread. Since these blow-by gasses are somewhat corrosive (to what extent I'm not sure), would heater hose last longer than just the clear stuff?

Also, what did you plug the end of the CCV receiving hose with, a 3/4" diameter bolt?

I'll have to do a search but if I remember correctly I saw a post of how your system cleaned itself up pretty good after the EHM. Can't remember how "sludge like" you system was, or if it was more of just an oil film...

I used a $.39 PVC (gray) plug from hardware store for the plug, never use a treaded bolt as it will cut threads in the hose and will allow seapage. The reason for the PVC hose is rubber heater hoses degrade fast when being soaked in oil, hydraulic hose will work but is far more costly. Besides the clear hose will be an eye opener.

The system only partly cleaned itself, all the hardened stuff was still there however. At present there is not one speck of oil or oil film in the new system that was installed under warranty.

Hmmmmmm. Don't like the sound of that. How much 'hard stuff' do you think was in the cooler as far as thickness??? Early stage coating of say 1mm or less - or a good amount of buildup? Did you get to keep your original cooler?

I'm thinking at my mileage of almost 15k miles it's not worth my time to actually clean the system, just stop the buildup...

Less then 1mm and I would say that just stopping at the build up at 15k would be enough, unless D/C with pay to take it off to clean or replace.

The dealer is holding it to see if D/C wants it back under the warranty, if not they will give it to me.

Anyone with a provent, and elephant hose mod please let me know which one is more effective, does the provent really seperate the blowby gasses or should I just elephant hose mod it.

I ordered the Provent the day I bought mine but did the EHM until it arrived a week later. In my opinion, the Provent is 100 percent effective and doesn't drop the crap all over the under carriage or send out smoke signals. I clean it every so often and use clear hoses to evaluate its on-going performance. I sure wouldn't want that s#%t in my intercooler, hoses etc.

Definately do either or. :!:

I used a wine bottle cork, one of the new plastic types. Fits nice and snug, no threads to hurt the hose, quick to remove when going to dealer for your latest trans/egr/recall.

Cost = another baby after my wife and I polish off a bottle :P Other than that...free.

Well, I finally pulled my CAC hoses on the 1-year birthday of my CRD ownership. :(

Everything was SOAKED with black oil, just drenched. I'm so upset I just don't know what to say. I performed the EHM and holy crap does that thing flow a lot of smog! I tried to route it as far away as possible but only made it down the driver side to vent out below and into the driver side wheel well.

Puts out a nice, constant, f-ing cloud of smog. The honeymoon is over with this rig...

There is a little difference between warranty on an item proven to be causing a problem and trying to get a dealership to do preventative maintenance under warranty. I have a feeling that 9 times out of 10, if you show that the CAC hose has an oily film they are going to say that it is normal for a diesel. Unless the hose is "bleeding" thru ect...you will probably get brushed off.
Goog point DW, mine were bleading through and the protectve rubber sleave had already desolved.

Looking back this morning my answer seem a bit gruff, I guess I am not getting out enough lately. Need to go bang a few down range, or more to the truth I need a break from wife, daughter and grandson. Sorry about that RFCRD.

Mine were bleeding with the rubber straps long gone and replaced with duct tape when shown the factory rep. She promised me new hoses but didn't follow through. I keep watching that hose and suspect it will fail/split in short order where it clamps to the turbo from the oil soaking, turbo heat, and boost pressure. That's the only place where I have an oily build-up following all the stuff I did to it. Oil back-drains and collects/pools around the top of the turbo flange, then bleeds through the hose near the clamp.

Wish I would of thought of the "get sloshed for the plug" mod! :D I could not find a suitable plug ANYWHERE! No plumbing stores has the plug OldNavy had. I ended up with a brass coupler and threaded brass end cap. It weights WAY too much - think I wasted $5 on those 2 parts alone.... No real good place to zip tie a giant weight ya know? I'll have to go back to the grocery store/wine isle so I can redo the plug!

That figures. The only home store I did not try yesterday was HomeDepot because it was 20 miles away. Now that I'm at work there is one next door. I'm going there at lunch and if I can find the plastic plug, I'll throw the brass fittings in my plumbing spare parts box in the garage.

Thanks for the tip...

Have you noticed any melting of the PVC hose due to contact with any engine components?

Hehehehe, Home Depot is always a lifesaver. I used the 3/4 gray color PVC for what ever purpose they use gray PVC for (hot water I thnk) and the PVC hose is still in great shape. Coke bottle does need replaced though.

This morning I pulled my EH in anticipation of going to the dealer for some service and it was bone dry......no oil at all after 1500 miles. I used a heater hose so I can't see very well but I did swap both ends with a paper towel.

Is this to be expected on a relatively new engine......3000 miles? Or does it take a lot more miles to coat the inside?

I zip tied the hose (clear pvc) in a route that didn't touch anything hot...turns out it is the similar route as Ole' Navy's in the pics in the sticky. There are plenty of good places along the way that aren't hot, and you can still put the engine cover down. Just be sure when you route it down the side that you zip it to the far side to keep it from flopping into the moving or hot bits.

Question?
EHM, installed as per Old Navy,
Does anyone have a problem pulling the Coke bottle up
from topside of the engine?

Old navy,
Did you loosen the tie on the wire harness where
the hose goes down?

Good question that I don't know the answer. I'm coming up on 15,000 miles pretty soon so I think the engine is just about broken in. I just installed the EHM and I'm going to monitor it over the next 5000 miles. If my clear hose stays clear, I'm pulling it all out in the spring.

It should take considerable mileage to get a good coating going so I'd bet 1500 miles is not enought to get the hose 'wet' yet.

**** Here is my question to everyone ****

Do I have to pull the EHM off with ANY visit for service such as just lower ball joint replacements? Or just when an emissions component fails?

When I do finally get LBJs, they will see my exit location for the EHM pipe and after 2+ nights of a zip-tie festival going on in my garage it's a dog gone work of art that I'm not anxious to remove!
