It could be many things most of the problems have been found to be low fluid level or seals leaking at the filters, some have even had porous valve bodies.
This was robxj's answer to the CRD tranny problem - not exactly a slam dunk. For one, some of us don't have leaking filters, have had the filters replaced and still have the issue. Also note that he mentions an air leak in the TC clutch lockup circuit, but never responds to exactly what part of the TC lockup circuit has the air leak. My bet is he is guessing based on several symptoms he has seen both at work and on these boards. Note how the tranny pump is not even mentioned. He further states that the latest tranny flash masks the problem by raising line pressure instead of fixing the leak - the source of which he identifies as "low fluid, seals leaking at the filters or a porus valve body."
However, why would a leaking seal on the filters only affect the TC lockup clutch and not the other clutches on shifting through 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears - my 545RFE shifts ok through these gears - its only on the TC lockup where the rumba dance starts.
Another issue is that DC does not routinely replace the tranny pump even if you have a TC failure - for the TSB to qualify, you must have a P07XX code show up - as they state in the TSB.
Wish DC did have a positive fix for this.
