I was just thinking the same thing this morning on the way back from the dealer. Too much rain, only one tech and he's not a diesel tech so I may wait awhile.

I have had 4 EGR valves replaced. I have 36K on my 2005 CRD. 85% of my driving is highway and the rest is in heavy stop and go traffic. I ordered a provent to see if this will help with the problem.

That is one thing good about living in Corn Patch USA (Iowa). No inspections of any kind. Heck, most of the vehicles used by farmers around here would fail.

Even all the commercial vehicle inspection requirements don't check emissions (at least in Iowa). Other states do some type of that so would only apply to semi's that go thru them.

I just hope that if my egr fails it is in closed position. Then I will enjoy a long relationship with my CRD and only worry about real mechanical repairs.

I would be inclined to leave it alone and not repair it if it failed closed, but I wonder how long the computer keeps track of such things. If you needed warranty work and the computer ratted you out that the CEL has been on for a year, it might be hard to get the warranty work. How far back does the engine computer keep track of things anyway?

When the 2nd egr failed on mine, it failed in the closed position - ran a lot better. But it never set a permanent MIL light, only a P0401 code, which I checked only by doing a routine check with the ignition key trick. However, it didn't stay closed - a couple of weeks after I discovered the code, it started to smoke badly and performance declined - sure signs it was sticking open. I was reluctant to bring it back in to the dealership - I pulled my repair records and remembered why - I added all the flash updates for all reasons and it came to 8 at that point - but I took it in anyway. Along with the new egr valve, they did another flash not listed on any TSB - whether related or not, I now have less torque, noticeably less, than before.

My guess is the EGR FCV has failed again, but I could be wrong. However I have the same symptoms as the last time when it was the FGV that failed.
