I once was stuck in Chicago traffic when an old man was driving down the shoulder like it was the only lane with no traffic in it. Totally oblivious to anything going on, besides the fact that traffic was totally stopped in all lanes. I'm just glad nobody was actually in the shoulder lane changing a tire or something.

Well I beleive every state should do physical & mental tests on people every two years to determine their ability to drive safely. All drivers, not just elderly. How's the driver's license laws in your state. I heard Arizona lets you keep the same one for eternity.

Good way to generate state dollars also.

Actually I have friends from arizona and i think the licenses take 50 years to expire

My favorite was when I was driving in FL (retirement city!) and when there was an accident on I-95, on the shoulder, not obstructing any traffic lanes, all traffic would come to a dead stop right at the accident because people were like "Oh, no. Something out of the ordinary. My old brain can't process information that quick. I guess I'll just stop and wait for someone to tell me what to do." I saw this time and again.

I think when many of us here get really old we would only have to push a button on the dash for shopping, bingo and retirement home. Yeah, I would like it to fly too.

This thread really took on a life of its own! An important fact of the story is that the driver (regardless of age) emerged from an overturned KJ unhurt. Further demonstration of the safety of a KJ.

As for insurance rates, I'm sure the average insurance cost for an elderly person is much much lower than that of a young person simply because they don't drive as often.

A few years back when I worked in the insurance business, that age group 75+ had the 2nd highest accident rate and only slightly better than 16yr olds in their first 6 mos of driving. Their claims pay-outs were higher due to the types of accident they have (slower speeds, tend to mame people). Even certian car models (ie.. big Buicks) tend to have elevated insurance rates as many elderly owners have a high frequency of claims. I know my dad's insurance rates almost doubled when he bought his Buick last year.

I would believe that too .. to be honest I didn't read up on it or even check. My dad works for progressive, and all I really know about insurance prices is that my insurance is high right now and will remain so for a few years .. even though I've never been in an accident or had a ticket. :(

Hey auggy, have your dad break it down for you on how the industry really keeps a man down.

Ghetto folks with Hondas pay higher rates, Race is everything, eventhough they hide it with demographics and other junk. Old white folks with Vettes and caddy's are cheap not because they don't drive as much either. High theft vehicles (race). Amount of claims.

I know some old farts that still fly fighter jets.
Some old farts are just plain quicker, stronger, and sharper than many young folks on their best days.

You said: "Oh and you have not seen an elderly person on a cell phone in their car because for the most part they don't have cell phones or use them sparingly."

Thats not accurate either, they just use them safer !!!

I've seen some terrible accidents first hand where the cell phone users drove right under a vehicle at 70mph without even touching the brakes.

Even pried one dumb honey out with my six foot breaker bar before her truck caught on fire under a dump truck. I told her " both your legs are broken to bits, here is a fire extingisher, & and the good news is...your cell connection is still good, here is your phone, hang up and call 911".

She even tried to sue the dumptruck driver and the landscape company until I testified !!!!!!!

The KJ driver was safe...Thats god news.

I don't think race actually plays into rates, as much as people would like to think. Location, however, would definately come into play. People in the ghettos of big cities (regardless of race) are bound to pay more in insurance on the same car than someone in a nice suburban town .. that's just life.

As for the comment about old people and cell phones .. It depends what age you draw the line at, but the percentage of old people who own/use cell phones is MUCH lower than the percentage of young people who own/use them.

We have relatively low rates in NE Ohio. Was paying almost twice as much when living in the suburbs of Chicago. Moved back to Kent and was able to lower my deductibles, raise the liability limits, and add an additional used pick-up truck for what I was paying for one car in Chicago. Now adding the KJ was another matter, almost as much as my car and truck combined including a surcharge for being a CRD.

Not really true. Race is irrelevant, location is a factor. Many insurance companies rate risk by claims history in a given area and group this by zipcode.

Non-ghetto types (like myself) paid through the nose for a Toyota Camry because it was at the top of the stolen car list and worth more dissassembled than whole. My '97 Chevy 1500 pick-up of all things is @ #6 on the list in the Cleveland area I pay hefty premiums. Someone was unsuccessful in getting into the truck one night and my CRD was 4 weeks old when someone tried to steal it (brick through the drivers window). The only reason they didn't get the CRD was they could not get the transfer case into neutral. Unfortunately that's the risk I take for having to park for work "in the hood" a couple of nights a week.

Tell ya what, they have the lowest insurance rates and the biggest cars, so the majority of yall's claims (crying) are unfounded. I have yet to see an old fart with a cell phone in his ear and the front end of the vehicle buried under a dump truck either. Rock-on...Cry babies

There ya go. 8)
