Yeah then you have guys like me that bought an early CRD (built April 2005) and put over 20,000 HARD miles on it, driving off-road on rough trails, towing way over the limit, occasional racing, etc....and I never ever had one single tranny or EGR problem. CRD is bulletproof to me.

Point is, some have trouble, some don't. Just like every other vehicle on the lot. The CRD Liberty is by no means junk just because a few people had some problems. It's still the only reason to buy a Liberty.

I agree....this is the only reason I bought a jeep. I only have 2500 miles on mine and I am hoping that it doesn't have any problems.

Exactly, the percentage of people on all the popular CRD Liberty sites is just a small fraction of the 11,000 US CRDs and those with major problems are an even smaller percentage.

Perception can sometimes seem like reality. When you keep reading about the same 3 or 4 problems over an elongated period of time by a small group of maybe 100 or 150 fanatical people, it can seem like the problems with the CRD are more widespread than they actually are and that every CRD is doomed to encounter each of those problems at some point down the road.

This is true...and another point is that often people come to these forums only when they have a problem and are searching the net....hence you tennd to see more problem reports rather than people praising their trouble-free CRDs.

I felt that way until 1 EGR valve, 1 egr flow control valve, 1 transmission selonoid pack, fuel economy went down instead of up as miles piled on. I had an 02 gas Liberty zero problems except ball jointsan 17 mpg on a good day. Almost 4 years later we have a redesigned lower ball joint. The problems are bigger than you think. Why else was there a 6 week wait for the replacement flow control valve? Jeep isn't alone with emissions related issues on their diesels. The big thing they need to do is extend the warranty on the EGR related parts from 36k to 100k maybe we would have more confidence. There is nothing like it in its class for power and towing and even the less than expected MPG's is better than the gas KJ. If only Diesel wasn't 40 cents a gallon more tahn gas!!

I resent the term "Fanatical" to describe me. I prefer the the more accurate phrasing: "borderline insane, soap-box diesel-proselytizer." :P
