Unfortunately, the Generals and BFGs are out of the running due to my 17" rims. Eventually, I'd like to step down to 16"ers, but not anytime in the near future. That will be the "several years" down the road expense when I get the opportunity to lift the KJ.

Until then, I'm stuck with tires that come in 235/65R17 or 245/65R17. Surprisingly, that eliminates quite a few very good candidiates. I did get a couple quotes for three alternatives (all are just 4 tires...Out-the-door prices):

Cooper Discoverer ATR $552
Firestone Destination A/T $530
Dunlop Radial Rover A/T $488

I'm leaning towards the Firestones and Coopers. Why? Don't know...just my gutt leading me in that direction.

I have become very familiar with "The Tire Rack". Lots of good information and user feedback. I will have to say that the "List of 49" is great for overcoming the potholes and roadkill on the road to the grocery store...but only one or two in there that I want to take on unimproved road surfaces.

Based on customer feedback from Tire Rack, I think my options will change as follows:

Cooper Discoverer ATR
Firestone Destination A/T
Yokohama Geolandar AT+II or AT-S (to replace the Dunlop Rover AT)

I'm leaning towards the Firestone over the other two. It seems to get a lot of good press here on LOST KJs and Tire Rack.

FWIW I put the Firestone Destination ATs on a work van and really liked them. They ran quiet, held the road nice and I never got the van stuck on construction sites. They tore through snow too.

It's too bad the Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revos don't come in 17" sizes. They are great on and off the road. I'm sure the Firestone Destination A/Ts are just as good though, as they're made by the same company and have almost identical ratings.

The more I look at my alternatives and the more I read from your other KJ owners....the more I lean towards the Firestone Destination A/T. At this point, I will give one more look at the Yokohama Geolandar AT+II's, but the other alternatives are out of the running. I'm going to probably run the current donuts for about one more month before making the investment. I definitely wnat them on before we hit the snow season....and I'm in the back country hunting.

Thanks for all the support!
