The rear coil springs are easy and simple to remove/install ... until a spacer lift is installed. So, short of a six hundred pound gorilla to stand on the rear axle, what is the best spring compressor to use for the rear coils?

I just use the stock jack provide with the Jeep to bing the axle down. Just put it on the control arm and up againt the frame and open her up.

I have done it as follows:

Jack the KJ with a floor jack under the differential (both wheels will lift)
Jackstands under the unibody in front of the rear wheels(both sides)
Tires off...lower shock mount bolt removed
Lower the floor jack and place it under the axle tube on one side of the jeep
Floor jack under one side of the axle and lift it (dont lift the jeep off the jack stands! )
Pull the springs out (step on the wheel studs if you need a little more room )

Button up that side and then repeat the process on the other one 8)

Good luck and be careful..

Yeah, what he just said. That's the way I got mine on, and I don't see why that wouldn't take them off.

This is a 50 page bump, lol!

My question however is: What is the best way to remove the front McPherson strut (spring and shock assembly)?

What is the best way to remove the springs? Or the entire thing from the jeep?

Just unbolt it to get it off the jeep..

You need to compress the spring and take the bolt off the top of the strut to take the spring out..

Try one of these, it only costs about $40. http://www.skywaytools.com/coilspringcompressors.html

So some have used some sort of spring compression tool and others haven’t?

Most of your quality parts stores have spring compressors to rent for a nominal fee. Mine just gives me the tools I need as long as I bring them right back, but I have a long term parts business with them.

The thread started with removing the rear springs with spacers installed. Then the 50 page bump moved to the front strut assy. Anyone who tries to remove the fronts without a tool must have a death wish......or is really really really really strong.

and if you're compressing CRD front springs - I think everyone's gone to a wall mounted compressor (common at tire stores) or hydraulic - the smaller units don't work well

i had mine done at a shop with a wall compressor i stood far away. The guy put A LOT of pressure on the springs when he put the spacers in there.

I would not want to try and compress that from strut assembly by myself... some people might, it may be different if your taking the stock assembly apart and not one with spacers in there. I would guess there is less pressure there....
