Who has the link handy to the "oiled fabric filters don't do much good and let in way more dirt than factory" article?

I spoke recently with a gentleman that builds high performance diesel trucks. Since he had a custom breather with a 6" pipe and a dry AEM on the end, I asked about the difference it makes. He said on a dyno, probably nothing. But, he said, it would make a difference on throttle response and turbo spool up.

So, the question we all have to ask is....is that worh $312???

Of course it is......because it will be way cool when we open our hood to show it off! :D

I have been running the AEM dry filter on my PSD for several months. It replaced an AFE oiled filter. I picked up a little milage and the filter gauge does not show restriction as quickly.

I wonder if someone could be bothered to go to a store that would have one of these to look at, & take a few pics.

I'm curious as to how they made it up, shouldnt be too many components I guess. I'd do it but there are'nt any AEM stores here in Australia :( !!

Actually 98% althouh it sounds great is by OEM industry standards a VERY POOR filter that lets about 10 tims the amount of dirt into an engine compared to OEM filters which generally will be 99 to 99.7% effective. A K&N filter is rated at 97% effective.

Below is a copy of a report from the Duramax ISO airfilter test.

Quote:
In 60 minutes the AC Filter accumulated 574gms of dirt and passed only 0.4gms. After only 24 minutes the K&N had accumulated 221gms of dirt but passed 7.0gms. Compared to the AC, the K&N “plugged up” nearly 3 times faster, passed 18 times more dirt and captured 37% less dirt. See the data tables for a complete summary of these comparisons.

So these filters should not be used unless you are doing real short duration oil changes in the range of 2,000 to 3,000 miles max, which would make running synthetic oil as required by warranty very expensive. If you use these filters you might as well switch to a non-synthetic oil and do 2,000/3,000 mile oil changes. I have talked with people that used these filters for years with no ill effect, but they were doing 2,000/3,000 mile oil changes compared to our 6,500 to 12,500 mile changes. This will make oil changes more expensive then using synthetic oil, requires a lot more down time and negates any MPG gain. As the mfg or user stated there was no HP increase on the dyno, so there is no real gain or reason to use the system other then to look "cool" and be thought of as uninformed by most of the experienced pro's who do not use these filters on their OEM cars at home.

One needs to remember that these filters originaly came about for use on race track and off road race cources and were used on vehicles that were torn down and rebuilt after races or on races like the Baha 1000 or such as the Dakar where they even have an oil change durring the race while drivers rest. These filters were then brought to the street use by some of the uninformed and the company's like K&N came about for this very lucertive money making market.

There are a couple of old sayings that come to mind here "Buyer beware & Afool and their money are soon parted" when I think of all these aftermarket filters that people buy due to marketing sales hype.

I'm with old navy again, years ago the fellows that offroad raced buggies and took money from K&N may have run them with the outside sock included but they also had deep pockets. By far the most popular was the Donaldson industrial swirl chamber filter that was a horizontal miniture of the 18 wheeler filters.

Thanks spoonplugger1.

What really bugs me in their add is this:
Quote:
The DRYFLOW Synthetic filter's unique non-woven polyester filter media is independently tested at over 98% initial filtration efficiency (99.4% cumulative efficiency) based on SAE J276 JUN93 Fine Dust Air Cleaner Test Code procedures.
that means they depend on the ditrt filling the filter to act as a filter improver. Man that is just stupid. When that type of filtering is used there is a heck of a lot of dirt going into the engine before the filter fills with dirt and the dirt starts acting as a filter.

The problem with our CRD intakes is there is a sensor on the airbox that needs to be there for the computer. Some will say just leave it off but, I won't do that. I am working on adapting an S&B conical to our existing modified air box

Image

I will know better next week and it may be something that can be done at home with a hacksaw and $50. I do know it will be a lot less than a 3" SS exhaust from the turbo back.

Since our CRDs are Turbo, I would be interested to know if this CAI will give more turbo sound. I like the turbo sound a whole lot and when I put one of these on my 2004 Volvo S40 Turbo, you could really hear that turbo whistle and it sounded cool :D

I would like more turbo sound as well, but I am not willing to give up any filtration to do it.
