Shell Rotella T (CJ-4) has been joined by Amsoil 5W-40 Premium Diesel Oil (DEO) with the CJ-4 rating. Both these are formulated for the newer 2007 emissions and soot control with ULSD.

These oils are both supposed to be able to keep the "soot" suspended in smaller molecules than lower rated oils (CI-4+ and down).

The newer (2007) emission standards have forced makers to employ EGRs that operate at higher (25%-35%) functioning rates. This means the newer engines run even hotter and require better protection than 2006 or older. The increased parameters on EGRs, Diesel Particulate Filters using the 15 ppm sulfur fuels (ULSD-which helps reduce particulate matter and works together with NOx reduction systems such as urea injection types) and the urea systems put different demands on our oils. The main thing CRD owners need to know is that the more an EGR is called on to work, the hotter the engine runs and less efficient it becomes.
It just makes sense that the CJ-4 rated oils will probably give us better protection.

The lower sulfated ash content (CI-4+ had 1.5%...the new CJ-4 is limited to 1%) will decrease lubricity and TBN to control alaklinity so new additives have been approved to reach the new CJ-4 rating. I think that this will lead to shorted drain intervals than the older oils (TBN has been decreased from 10-14 in CI-4+ to 8-9 in CJ-4). You can still do extended drain intervals but I wouldn't go the 25,000 mile route. I would suggest the 9,000-12,000 drain interval route with a new filter spun on every 3,000-4,000 and top off to bring back to correct level. Better safe than sorry.

Wally, This would help TBN and lubricity.

So the Rotella T in the blue bottle that I have been using all along already meets the CJ-4 rating? Or is it a different Rotella T you are talking about?

It's had the CJ-4Plus rating for some time :D

The Blue bottle with the CJ-4 from Rotella has just recently come out...according to thier own website. It has been available in bulk since around June I think. You just have to look on the back for the API Rating of CJ-4.

And they have redesigned the bottle for Cetane Booster also...has a neck that fits in the fuel neck.

I just spoke w/AMSOIL tech support about their options for the CRD. They recommended Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30 HD Diesel Oil over both Euro Formula 5W-40 & the new DEO 5W-40, if there is no regard for the warrantee. Explained that the performance of the latter 2 oils are constrained by U.S. & European regulations and that the difference in weight is negligible; that the additive package more than compensates for the decrease in viscosity while providing better mileage & cold weather performance. They recommended the Euro over the DEO if not the 5W-30.

Thoughts?

Also, since it seems the CJ-4 specification is driven by future emission control tech, I wonder if it could truly be beneficial over CI-4 for us. Does it provide protection above & beyond the older specifications, which may accomodate the burden of the EGR system, or does it simply provide the best protection given the formulation constraints imposed by these new emission requirements, such as NOx reduction systems? Any input? I'm just wondering if this new specification really benefits us given the reason for its formulation. I would think whatever provides the best protection is the best choice, regardless of phophorus, ash, & sulfur levels. And, since these additives are limited under CJ-4 for purposes other than protection, is it as protective for us who have no need for these limits? The only remarkable piece of emission equipment we have is the EGR, so this specification must either improve on soot management while sufficiently maintaining other protections or simply be generally better. Is it? I don't know.

Also, how does ULSD affect particulates? I understood that ULSD is here to allow for these new emission control technologies and doesn't do much in of itself.

The ULSD allows the use of Particulate Matter devices. With just the LSD, the particulate matter would "stress" the ability of the PM to function for a decent period of time.

As for the oil question, I am sure there are benefits to use either CJ-4 or CI ect. The soot protection is "supposed" to be superior with the CJ-4 but I have always used the Series 3000 in my work diesels with no problems. I used the Series 2000 in my racing Mazda RX-7s, MX-6s and Miatas with great results.
