Transfercase noise np242

A buddy of mine said the noise was the idler gear making the noise. Basically I hear it when I decelerate in 2wd, and when I have 4wd engaged the same noise occurs just louder. It is also louder when I turn on a slight radius like a traffic circle. The noise is pulsing metallic maybe 2 pulses per second. Any ideas would be helpful

check the chain in the transfer case. may have to be tightened up.

I think I'm hearing the same noise as kj@best. Can somebody post instructions (preferably with pictures) on how to tighten this chain? That would be a huge help and maybe save me from pissing away $200 at a dealership.

FWIW, I have the 70K mile Maximum Care extended warranty, and the transfer case part is covered. Do you think labor for transfer case adjustments is covered? I'll need to check my contract in the glove box.

You cannt just adjust the chain. Tcase must be opened up to do that..

Could just be normal noise. Its normal to hear a roar when the jeep is in 4wd pt or fulltime. We have 3 jeeps and they all do it.

If its a different type of noise then you may have a different problem.. The nv242 has been used for years.. Its a fairly stout unit and should last along time if taken care of..

I would have to agree....I have seen very few problems with the 24x family of cases. In the last 10+years I have only seen 1 chain loose enough to be a problem....Only time I have had to replace bearings are on ones that have been run dry/very loow on lube....And I have been inside many for SYE installs.

It is hard to say FOR SURE, without hearing/seeing it, but I would bet you are just hearing normal drivetrain noise....But it is worth it to check you driveline cv's/ujoints. Also check the front and rear output of the case for excessive play....it will wiggle a little, but should not be much.

On a side note. Working in various 4x4 shops, I always noticed more vehicles brought in for "noises" during the winter. When the weather gets cold, people keep the windows up and seem hear more noises. And it is the only time people use 4wd on the street in parttime rigs....

First thing I would imagine would be to check the fluid level, or change the fluid if it is time. You didnt submarine it did you? If so make sure there is no water in there.

I've got the exact same noise. While decelerating, regardless of what the transfer case is set to, I get a pulsing sound and a slight vibration near the accelerator. It seems to go in tune with the spinning of the front axle though, faster or slower depending on my speed.

Took it to the dealership and they said that they "could hear the sound but couldn't determine it's cause. Drive it for a while and if it gets worse bring it back in." Thanks guys! Big weight off my mind. Thankfully the idiots put that in writing so if something happens I could theoretically persue it legally. I'd prefer if they would just fix it in the first place.

I'm with Jeepjeepster and Jeger,of the t-cases i've had apart theres no way to adjust the chain.The chain will naturally stretch and get a little bit noisy but will not effect it's performance for many years.It's cheep enough to do a drain and refill also making sure you use the correct type and weight of fluid. :roll:

I parked @ the top of a hill, put the Tranny and the t-case in Neutral and began rolling down the hill. Turning right or left and braking hard made the noise louder. I had a brake shop inspect the brakes and they were fine, u-joints are fine. Does this mean that my CV joints should be checked?

If the CV's are going bad you would hear a clicking, or popping noise, especially while turning sharply. If they are getting real bad you will know soon enough :twisted:

Couldnt hurt to have them checked. Hope it is that and not something wrong with the front diff.
