Had to leave the CRD out last night (down to the low 20's) and when I went to start it the glow plug light only came on for a few seconds. It started fine, but I was surprised how short the GP's were on. My 99 diesel Ram (with grid heaters instead of GP's) usually runs them for 30 or so seconds at that temp. Anyone with a different experience?

We got the high tech ceramic glow plugs, they stay on 2-3 seconds usually. Lots of things on this rig is higher tech than usually seen here in the US on diesels.

I don't know what I would do in a diesel with a glow plug warmup faster than 2 seconds. :P

When I first got my CRD, I NEVER saw the glowplug light go on. In fact, I thought the lamp was burnt out. Turns out that the longest I have seen the light on was for about 3 seconds when the temperature was below 0 degrees.

Gotta love technology! In fact, if temperature is above 40 deg F, I never wait or check to see if the light comes on or goes out before I engage the starter.

The longest I've had was about 5-6 seconds and that was after sitting out all day at work with the front end pointed into a blistering sub-zero wind and ice storm. It ran like crap for a good 60 seconds before it smoothed out.

So far all I have seen is a brief flash - one second or less. During the summer I did not even get that. The coldest it's been since I bought it last June is about 30 degrees. I'm not worried, since it always starts right up and runs fine.

Worst I had was last Thanksgiving night in Philly. -14 on the EVIC overnight and blasting humid frozen wind all night. Got up the next morning and the light was on for about 5-6 seconds. I started it up after the light went out and it started rough and then blasted out a big cloud of smoke. Idled a bit rough for about 30 seconds, then chugged like a champ the rest of the day. I think that hard start was because I filled up in VA Beach and then drove up there on "Southern" diesel fuel. Next time I go north in the winter I'm going to fill up AFTER I get there. Fuel prices be damned, that rough start was ROUGH!

Most days in VA Beach the light is off by the time the CD starts playing.

I don't understand...

The coldest temperature I've started up my Jeep in is about 28º. I've never seen that glowplug light on for longer than 2 seconds. It's on, then it goes off, I start the engine, it runs, lol.

There is nothing to understand, it's working fine. Mine took longer in sub-zero temperatures in howling wind. Take another 30 degrees off of your 28 and add some wind and it will take a little longer.

So far mine hasen't been on for more than 2 seconds.. and in the morning it's about 0 - 2 degrees Celsius. Once winter comes (southern Ontario) and it starts to dip down to minus 20 Celsius I might be singing a different tune.. :(
