Last time I towed a 4,000 lb. load I got 20.5 miles per gallon. That's ten miles per gallon better than my '04 Ram 1500 got with the same load! Amazing!

Yea, but don't forget most of them PAID a PREMIUM just to buy a CRD.

I wanted a CRD REAL bad, but the Stealerships will NOT deal on them. I would have ended up paying an EXTRA $64 per MONTH if I decided to buy a CRD instead of my gas Libby.

How long would it take to recover your cost for the Premium in fuel costs savings ??

There's a formula for it, but it will take SEVERAL YEARS to make up for the difference.

On a recent trip across the state of Michigan (holland to Detroit) I recorded a personal best:
A strong tail wind that day netted me 32.2 MPG @70mph averaged over a 3 hour drive

You also have to factor in you also get a better transmision and select track transfer case. The diesel will last longer and tows better than the v6 and will have a higher resale value. And you change the oil evry 6k instaed of 3k. I was able to get a pretty good deal on mine so I don't think I paid a premium to get the CRD.

Wish fuel was at 1.50 per gallon, but at 2.99 per gallon it's paid for in 4 years.

Yeah, I'm in the throws of deciding now. Whether to pay a ($5,000) premium for the CRD (and have to smuggle it past the DMV here in Cali) or buy a gas KJ. My only thought is I tow my 3,500lb motorcycle trailer monthly and the 9mpg I get w/ my Wrangler sucks. Based on some of the other threads here a gas Libby would only get 11-12 towing that load.

Also w/ diesel prices out of control here ($3.49 today - regular unleaded: $3.09) it would only save me ~$500/year. That's 10 years to make up the difference. But what's the emotional value of having gobs of tourque?

Decisions decisions....

Well, on this tank I've got 330 miles on the first 1/2 of the tank so far. That is working out to around 30 miles per gallon to this point. AT that rate, the CRD will pay for itself over the V6 in a hurry. I'm getting close to 75% better mileage than my wife's '04 3.7L. Can't argue with that...

For us the increased milage was a secondary benefit. Our primary reason for moving to a diesel was engine life. When we traded my wife's Wrangler in, it had over 69k miles on an '03 model. There are people out there who average 12k miles per year on a vehicle, but that's not us.

Well I drive about 1,500 miles per month. At this rate, allowing for 25 miles per gallon with the CRD, that's roughly $150/month for fuel here.

My wife's V6 Libby gets 15-16 miles per gallon, so at 1,500 miles per month that's more like $250/month for fuel.

So not only does the diesel engine last longer, and provide more torque, but it also increases resale value, AND saves me $100/month on fuel alone which more than makes up for the extra cost of the option.

Personally I think it's pretty simple. If you drive your Jeep every day, the CRD is definitely worth it. If your Jeep sits in the driveway or garage more than it's driven then the CRD isn't worth it.

At $2.79 I got my money back in a year plus will more towing power, higher resale and lower maintence cost.

Well as of lunch today I have 408 miles on this current tank of diesel. And my guage still shows over 1/4 tank left! This is going to be a new record for me. I estimate that I'm going to see about 28 miles per gallon on this tank. I've got over 7,000 miles on my CRD so far and each tank has averaged between 20-24 miles per gallon. This time (in the wake of Hurricane Katrina) I have slowed down to the speed limit and turned the AC off and WOW what a difference. I used to laugh at the guys who claimed 29 and 30 miles per gallon with these things, but I won't laugh anymore. I drive in town quite a bit, and I'm looking at close to 30 miles per gallon from this tank. That's getting close to 100% better than my wife's new 3.7L V6 Libby. Unbelievable!!

I can't believe there are actually people who still think the CRD won't pay for itself.

I got a personal best out of a tank going from Draper, UT to Logan, Ut of 29 mpg. Kinda strage because it is pretty steep up that canyon. From Vegas to SLC cruising 80 still getting about 26-27.5

Shouldn't this thread be titled "Fuel Mileage" not "gas mileage"?

Bcool- I know what your talking about. Drove my crd from Logan to Bountiful and I averaged 29 mpg. You just have to keep your foot out of the turbo. But all of this was done with 2.5 OTT lift and 245/75/16 Goodyear Wrangler MT's. It just takes time to breakin a diesel.

I about fell out of my seat this morning while reading the following:

http://www.freep.com/money/autonews/consumer7e_20050907.htm

Quote:
Consumer Reports said some the widest differences were for the diesel four-wheel-drive version of DaimlerChrysler AG's Jeep Liberty, at 11 miles per gallon in city driving compared with an EPA rating of 22; Honda's Civic Hybrid, at 26 m.p.g. in city driving compared with EPA's 48; and DaimlerChrysler's Chrysler 300C, at city mileage of 10 m.p.g. compared with EPA's 17.

I never liked the CR rag anyway since the likes of Honda and Toyota could never do no wrong but couldn't believe the BS they printed and even included a Honda. The only thing missing about the Honda was a statement by CR that it was a "best buy". Maybe they made a mistake and was testing a Jeep Commander with a HEMI.

I bought it new with the OTT lift from a dealer in Salt Lake. It's a spacer lift so I haven't had any problems with sagging. the only issues I've had have to do with the cheap rear shocks that come with the OTT lift. They squeak like crazy if you don't lube them every week or so. I plan on putting on a straight axle conversion and some 33's when one becomes available.
