PLEASE, PLEASE file a report if your CRD goes into limp mode.

While the F31 is better it is obvious it isn't so much a cure as a band aid.

Wow, it seems that they will have to do something about it then wont they? Unfortunately it will probably just be a software change. So then what happens if our tranny or something else has a major malfunction at 70 MPH, we wont get limp home mode, we will get self destruct mode  Maybe a recall like this could be one step closer to some real fixes.

Cerich, perhaps you could start a petition for the limp mode folk just like the trans shudder? Going into limp mode on a freeway or Interstate is about as dangerous as it gets, especially considering the prevalence of "tailgators". It is dangerous in town too.

Honestly I can't see a petetion doing anything at all.

We are fortunate that we have a DC employee who works on the VM engine posting great information here. I was shocked when I read his post that affirms that they have experienced the same issue with the engine on the bench (which kills my thinking that it was completly a Tranny/TC issue) then said a restart seems to fix it. Unfortunatly in a CRD on the road a restart may be too late and people may be hurt and dying. At the very least his post can be used to establish that DC was aware of the problem when a lawsuit gets filed (which is a matter of how soon, not if)

I can only conclude that DC is fully aware of the issue and is either ignoring it or trying to fix it. In the meantime it is us CRD owners/family and friends that are being placed at risk.

Filing a report with the NHTSA "may" force the government to investigate, as of now with quite a few reports they still haven't opened an investigation. The question for me is that many other recall recently were begun by the NHTSA with fewer reports of a problem. My feeling is that they are looking at it as a % of all Liberty's, not a % of CRD's.

That all being said I do really like my CRD...

The similar issues that I've had with the engines here at RHIT are from a different application, but the same situations can be applied to the KJ program as well.

You have to remember that the TCM has the ability to command a torque reduction to the engine's ECU, so it's not always the engine's fault that it's not performing as it should. The 545RFE from my experience has been very hit and miss - it either works great with no problems or there's an issue of some sort.

Over the summer we had some similar issues with the new JK Wranglers that are using the new 2.8L VM with the 545RFE for ATX applications...while out West on a trip, you'd be driving along, and all of a sudden the transmission would just drag the engine down to zero RPM and it'd die in the middle of the freeway. First the TC was replaced, vehicle sent back out on test - same problem still. Powertrain finally replaced the transmission with a new one, and the torque converter with a re-design piece that had upgraded lock-up clutches in it and the problems went away and never came back. I'm guessing that the TC's for the new TSB are these pieces - definitely get it done ASAP.

My feeling is that the situation isn't limp home because if so, the MIL/Check Engine light should be on per OBD guidelines - most likely an issue with the TCM or the physical trans itself.

Thanks, I REALLY appreciate the insight and sorry if I came off harsh before. I have high hopes for the F37 recall/cust. satisfaction work. It may be a bummer to lose some of the torque but safety is first, having the rest of the CRD last as long as it seems the VM will comes second and tire burning torque for me last.

Couple questions for you.

How will those that have gone the chip route be affected by F37?

Given regular and good preventive maintenance do you feel the VM 2.8 will significantlly outlast the 3.7 gass engine?
