Mentioned to my dad that I was getting the tranny fluid & filters changed. He said to make sure they do the TC at the same time. Is this neccessary? How do you do this? :?

when we did ours at 36K I did not see it in the book so I left it alone
the only way to get it dry is with a special machine that sucks it dry and not realy needed

I also put a drain plig in my TJ on the trans pan and every other oil change I drain out and refill
I am going to wait until the 7/70 is up befor I do that to the KJ I dont want the guys at the dealer getting confused

Our torque converters do not have drain plugs. Some vehicles do.

There are basically two types of transmission service.

In the first type, they drop the pan, dump the trans fluid from the pan, clean out the pan and the magnet, change the filter, and then refill the transmission with fluid. Roughly 5 quarts of trans fluid are changed. There is roughly 6 quarts left in the tranny (i.e. in the torque converter) that doesn't get changed.

The second type is a transmission flush. They hook a machine up at your transmission cooler lines and pretty much replace all the fluid in your transmission with fresh fluid. However they don't usually drop the pan or change the filter.

My preference is the first type. My fluid was still very clean at 38K, so I'm not worried about only changing 1/2 of it. I'm much more concerned with making sure the filter is changed and all the gunk (clutch material, etc) is cleaned out of the pan and off the magnet.

The flush method does change all the fluid in theory, but then leaves you with a potentially dirty filter and garbage in the pan. Also some people claim the machines that forcefully flush the trans, kick up and force a lot of that garbage in your pan back through your transmission.

I guess in a perfect world you'd find a mechanic who would drop the pan, change the filter, and then flush all the fluid.

Just make sure whatever you choose to do, that you or your mechanic uses ATF+4 transmission fluid.

Thanks!
Gonna have it done at the dlr w/some other services. I guess the standard service is drop pan/change filters & fluid.
I figure with 70k on it, it's time.

Haha.. yea.. I would get it flushed since youve never had the oil changed.. It may cost alittle more. But it would be the best idea..
