After much searching for a wrecked 4cyl, including several nation-wide yard searches, it looks like I'm going to have to buy the gears from a Mopar parts site. 4.10s, here I come.

After much reading about the various lockers and LSDs people have used, I'm have more questions about what to use.

the DTT up front still seems like the most popular way to go and from what people report, it's not all that bad on-road. But then there is the Aussie locker for the front that no one knows anything about. Think that will shatter the case like the front ARB has been reported doing?

The back also has me wondering. I can get an ARB setup for a $1000ish, or I can get the powertrax no-slip for under $400 and have to deal with both axles being weird on the highway. It sucks needing to make a $600 decision like that.

Al, or anyone else that might know, Can I use any compressor with the ARB? i.e. If I chose to get Viair compressor instead, it would run the arb locker, right? what if I ran it through a tank then to the arb? Would that cause it to be locked on if the tank had pressure? or is there a shutoff on the arb even if the air pressure is there but you don't want it on?

Is that grease I see from a leaky CV joint boot in the pinch weld photo? Better check that!

Yes a Viair will work. However this “portable” one in the link will not. It needs to be a mounted compressor. One like the 400 or 450 series. In fact that’s the compressor / locker setup I am going with. I have the 450 compressor. It was mounted this fall. I will get to the Locker over the winter (it is setting on the work bench as we speak).

I like the Idea of ARB over the cheaper Detroit just because you can turn it off for highway driving or making tight turns. The install kit from ARB has a switch that mounts on the dash. With the locker off your axle runs just like it has an open differential. With out all the ill handling effects of a mechanical locker. With as much time as I spend on the road. It’s worth the extra money to me. Image

I'm not sure actually how the locker runs on air. I don't know if it needs a constant supply of air to operate. Or maybe if it just fills the actuator at the time the system is turned on. Then releasing that air to turn off. Either way running with a tank will not affect the operation of an ARB. In fact if it needs a constant supply of air it will help the compressor. As it will not need to run contently. Just as necessary to keep the tank filled.

The ARB that fits the Liberty is RD93. The best place I found was RockyRoad $698+shiping. http://www.rocky-road.com/kjarb.html

It's a spray-on compound sorta like bondo. We put a ton of it on there because I removed my plastic wheel well liners a long time ago and there were a lot of chips in the paint from rocks bouncing off it. This was to seal it all and give some shock resistance. It's still wet in the pictures.

Thanks for the info Jason. When you say you are skipping the detroit, do you mean you are putting an ARB in the front too? I'm ascared that I might blow my diff :(

update...

According to Anthony at Reider Racing, Dana, yes Dana, the actual mfg od the D30a, has a gear set listed for the front of the liberty. It is a specific part # and is different than the part # for other implementations of the D30.

I'm getting a set for $131, which is the shop cost, because I am acting like the guinee pig.

I'm assuming that if these are actual Dana parts, and are listed specificly for the liberty, then they should work.

Anyone have an opinion on this?

Who's reporting the ARB is causing the shattering? You cant go by what some of the "house experts" here say. Out of the grenaded diffs, how many were running an ARB, or even a front locker? I'm still planning on putting one up front.

The ARB needs constant pressure to lock the diff, 85-105 psi. When you flick the switch, the solenoid will let air through whatever source you're using and the pressure locks the diff. When you unlock it, the pressure is released by the solenoid. If your gonna run a higher pressure tank, you;d just need a regulator to bring it down.

Good find on the gears-let me know if they work out.

I'll let you everyone know about the gears. if they work, it would be a HUGE problem overcome for the community.

Todays order consisted of:

1 ARB for the rear
1 DTT for the front
4:10s for the 8.25
Master rebuild kit for the 8.25
4:10s for the D30a

I still need to get a rebuild kit for the Front. I'm trying to find out if people who have done the swap used a rebuild kit from somewhere or had to get the parts from the dealer.

I was seriously contemplating getting an ARB for the front today. Only problem is this started as a gear swap. Then I decided to get the DTT for the front because it's relatively inexpensive and will help offroad. Today I said WTF and got the ARB for the rear when I placed the order. I just couldn't justify the extra $400 more than the DTT cost after I dropped $700 on the ARB that wasn't planned.

Cool Gris 8)

You will have to let everyone know how the front gears work out. You will start a frenzy with everyone if they do. I can’t help but wander if there not the gears Dana makes for Mopar. Hey where are you going to get the work done? I still need to find a shop to put my locker in. I hope to have it ready for the January run.

BTW: the ARB is for the rear. I too don't want to grenade the front. What I meant was ARB for the back vs. the Detroit that can't be switched off.

ARB Lockers need a constant supply of air to stay running.

So do they need air pressure to stay disengaged as well? Or do they just disengage when the air pressure is taken off?

The teeth need to disengage from the shafts to unlock. To do this, the teeth need to be lined up perfectly. It takes a bit of time (seconds) to work but it eventually does. No it does not need air to disengage (to my knowlage).

was a present waiting for me when I got home today. A box that made me go "ugh" when I tried to pick it up.

Inside I found:

Yukon 8.25 4.10s
Yukon 8.25 Master rebuild kit
Detroit TrueTrac for a D30
ARB Air Locker for a 8.25
Spicer 4.10 gears for 02+ Jeep Liberty KJs.

Only thing I need now a rebuild kit for the front.

Gris,

I bought the YK D30-CS master install kit ( www.peakempire.com ) to supplement the ring gear bolts, pinion nut, and crush sleave that came with the OEM front gears ( www.worldpartsexpress.com ). I also had to buy a separate pinion seal and inner pinion bearing ( www.worldpartsexpress.com ). I don't think the pinion seal and inner pinion bearing in the YK D30-CS are compatible with the D30a. If you don't have it already you might also want to pickup an OTC-6602 bearing preload wrench ( www.atoolcrib.com ). I first placed the order for my locker at Rocky Road, but after changing the expected arrival from two weeks to seven without telling me I quickly changed over to Performance Off Road Center ( www.performanceoffroadcenter.com ). Now that I've edited this post ten times, I've just got to install everything

Thanks again for the info Unixxx!

More news...

I say a front diff on eBay for $100, locla pickup only, about 30 minutes from my house.

I went up to get it and the guy had a whole -02 that rolled parted out.

I ended up getting:

The front diff
Whole rear axle,
Steering wheel/column with radio, cruise, and fog controls.
lots of trim pieces for inside
vent covers (mine ar all broken)
foot area courtesy light
more little stuff

for $365. weee

Good thing is now we can put the gears in this new front diff instead of incapacitating my jeep to see if they fit!
