My Father-In-Law gave me a Loaded 91 XJ for a second car until we can get another one. The only problem is that it has not title. Do you any of you have any idea where I get a title without paying a arm and a leg. I appreciate your help.
Thanks!

Go to the DMV and get the papers to file for a lost title. If he was the last title holder, then it should be just a matter of getting his signature on it and turning it in.

You bought a car from a dealer with no title? Is that even legal?

So what happens when they file for a title and find out somethings wrong (stolen??). Do you lose a car? What about doing a car fax report? What that give you a clue?

If the dlr "repossesed" it because it was left for repairs which were never paid, etc. They wouldn't have a title. However, in order to sell it, they have to apply for a "Garageman's Lein" which basically means that they are taking the car to satisfy the repair bill. Then you take that paperwork to DMV and apply for a title. Otherwise I can't see any other way a dlr could sell a vehicle w/o a title. UNLESS it was, I believe, 1960s or earlier when they didn't issue titles but had "transferable registrations" or true "pink slips". Even so, there would still be transfer paperwork. If you bought a vehicle that doesn't satisfy either of those conditions, then you basically bought the Brooklyn bridge!

The jeep was sold to my father in law by the repair shop, because it needed a new cylinder head, customer just left it. It was in NY and brought to MD.

Exactly. A dlr can't sell you a car without ownership wether it's a lein or a clear title. If they did, then they are basically selling you a technically "stolen" car. The original owner could claim it back at any time or have you arrested. If none of that is likely, at the very least, you won't be able to register it.

My dad used to get mechanic's leins all the time on motorcycles left at the shop that owners never picked up after they were repaired. Usually they had to sit for something like 6 months unclaimed until the storage fees + the repairs exceeded the value of the vehicle. Then in order to get the lein, you had to have an "auction" which basically meant advertising the vehicle in a local paper to enable anyone to buy it (no one ever came to these auctions but it's a legality requirement and even if they did, the starting price was the amt of the repairs + storage). Then you had to take the newspaper ad and all records of attempted contact with the owner (returned certified letters, etc.) and give those to the "auctioneer" who was a service licensed by NY state which then applied to DMV for the paperwork which cost like $200 per vehicle. Then you had to wait while the state processed the paperwork which could take weeks to months more. All in all, it was usually a no-win deal as just about any of these we were able to sell later usually sold for less than what the repairs and paperwork cost.
Unfortunately it was the only way to get rid of some of these. If you simply broke them up for scrap, you could be sued by the owner if he ever came back. Let alone fines from the state. We had bikes sitting in the shop for literally years because they weren't worth the $200 the paperwork cost. Eventually, you broke em up for scrap years later.
Finally we learned to take substantial deposits on any bike left for major work.
