Has anyone tried siping their tires before changing them ? Seems like everyone agrees that they are terrible in the wet or snow.
I'm wondering if siping them would help enough and allow me to delay the purchase of new tires...

From my experience, I think the piss poor traction is more a function of the compound then the siping. Looking at them they seem to have pretty good water channeling from stock. I think the compound is designed for mileage not gripping and as such is just too hard.

I don't think you will need to be in a real big hurry to swap them out. We had our first big snow yesterday, so I played a round a little with the kj. The stock tires did all right, I need to change them as well, but I have no promblem with waiting untill spring. they weren't that bad. What I was pleased with, was the traction control. I had my wife spin the tires on the snow in the driveway. It would spin both rear tires like a posi rearend. I wonder how it would work with a tru-trac lsd and trac-control ?

I dont think extra siping would help either, the tires are just rather poor to begin with. I will be running mine until they are worn out though, either on the jeep or on the van. Definantly be aware of your level of traction with these tires, but I wouldnt change them out unless you dont feel safe with them. Personally I have not had a major problem, but I am probably used to driving on wore out tires :?

The traction control rocks, and the DTT would be an awesome addition to an 06 I believe.

The knock on Goodyear's around hear is that they're made for long life and highway comfort. (soft ride and quiet) The only time you see them is when they come with a vehicle. We drive under snow, packed snow, and ice conditions for about 6 months a year. Very few locals would buy Goodyear's as a replacement tire. Traction and safety trump comfort and longevity.

I have an '03 without traction control and with the open differential. I just bought it a few months ago. It has 2 tires at 50% and 2 almost new tires (One of the new one was the spare and the previous owner had a blowout so he had to buy another tire). My Cherokee had BFG ATs and they were great in the wet and snow.

You have an 06, so new tires. I heard that the tires are grippy for the first few thousand miles and then go south...

I took the stock Goodyear tires off within the first 6 month, they were terrible.I went with the Bridgestone Dueler A/T REVO's and man what a difference. Same thing on the wifes Pontiac Vibe Goodyear RS-A's lasted 34k miles. Not a big fan of Goodyear.

It's $10 per tire at Discount Tire. I inquired but have never had it done. This might be my first time...

Goodyear makes some great tires, but you pay for them. The stock tires on the Jeep are just cheap azz tires. Mine wore fast, were very prone to puncture, too soft for decent handling, and were not agressive at all.

That being said, GY does make some great winter tires, and passenger car tires. The Good Year Triple Tread was one of the best tires I've ever owned on my Grand Am (that I traded on the Jeep).

Around here we have alot of snow from December unitl April so I run a dedicated winter tire. I'll be buying new summer tires this spring and keeping whats left of the stock tires to turn the vechicle in at the end of the lease.

I agree with mberthia, bfg ko's are awesome tires, I had them on my wrangler when I had it, I do have them on my ranger 265/75-16's and will have them on the kj come spring, Lord willing. Unless I get some for xmass in my stocking !!!!

With my stock Wrangler ST's, I fishtailed going through an intersection on the third day of ownership. I was travelling 10-15 mph in rainy weather. I blamed myself and figured it was because I was new to SUVs. Well, the wet traction just got worse despite my rotating the tires after every second oil changes. (They had plenty of tread when I took them off at 39,000 miles, so I don't think siping would have helped.) Offroading wasn't much of factor when choosing a new tire. I could have waited another 15K-20K miles, but knowing my wife was going to be driving the KJ more to take the kids to school, I wanted a safer, beefier tire. Now I have the best of both worlds: good road manners and respectable offroad capability.

I did a 180 on the ice last January pulling out of my subdivision onto a busy street with 50 mph speed limit. While turning to the right from a stop, the rear end broke free, and as I tried to regain control, the whole KJ started sliding sideways. Terrible feeling being in 4HI and having NO CONTROL WHATSOEVER. I thought I was going to end up dead in the retention pond across the street. When the tires caught traction on packed snow I was able to swing it around and rest at the side of the road, but facing backwards. That was the only true "oh sh*t," life-flashing-before-your-eyes moment in the KJ. I HATE ice.

You can sipe them with a 12 gauge because that is about all they are good for. I couldn't get them off my KJ quick enough becasue my it is my wife and kid's daily ride. The wet traction was the worst of any tire I have ever had. My FJ40 with Mud TA's was safer in the wet.

Stopping on wet roads is improved. I have not yet had the opportunity to drive on snow or ice. Siping did not change the noise level.

Overall, I am glad that I had the MTR's siped, but the improvement is not drastic.

i was goin down a hill about to turn left, i hit the brakes normally as i would in the rain, and when i hit them all 4 tires locked up and i had the wheel turned to the left and it didnt wanna turn, i just started drifting into the other oncoming lane almost hitting the front right corner or my jeep against the corner guardrail, ending up about 1 foot from the gauardrail, sitting in the other lane and having to back up to make the left back on the sidestreet. a week later i got new tires haha :)
