Hey all, I'm rather new. Just got my KJ, pics here http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=15470. I'd somehow like to go from grey flares and bumpers and all that to black. But the matte finish like on the Sport models, not glossy and painted like the Limiteds. Renegade flares would also be cool...where should I look/what should I know to get this done? Ive heard that the sport flares arent really paintable because of the texture. Anyone wanna trade their black sport trim for my grey stuff??? :)

I have never seen black sport trim. I want to paint mine black but I haven't done any research yet. I was told to just buy plastic paint and it would work fine.

I saw a all black rear sport bumper for sale on ebay last week...so they do exist. I did the black paint thing because my bumpers faded badly by the end the first summer. Used several coats of krylon fusion and krylon matte clear coat to finish. Didn't remove flares, just taped up. These pics taken of the front 3/4 and more from the side on a sunny summer day about 6 months after i painted.

The paint on the flares and the rear bumper generally holds up ok; my KJ stays on the street tho. What you can't see in the picture is badly the front bumper needs to be repainted because of all the the chips and nicks. And among other things, gasoline will take the paint right off. Ultimately i think the best way to do it is to find a black plastic front bumper (if they exist) and renegade flares. If the renegade flares a) are really easy to take on and off and b) can be used on the sport, it would make the paint job easier and come out better.

hmm thanks for the help guys. I dont think i'm ready to paint my own vehicle, never tried that before. Yours looks great though boi1ermaker! I dont know if the sport trim I'm thinking of is actually black, but just a lot darker than the grey thats on my KJ. Maybe I'm just losing it, but I could have sworn that the trim on the other 06 KJs i looked at, the infero red and jeep green metallic, were a lot darker. I'm going to drive to the dealership today to take a look...

I think my 06 Sport's trim looks darker than previous models. Maybe its just a matter of time till it fades though?

Probably so, but being up north certainly helps. It was only about 4 weeks ago that it finally stopped feeling like summer down here. During the summer, i clean and treat the side mirrors and air cowl about every three weeks to keep them somewhat black. Haven't needed to touch the mirrors since it cooled down. I couldn't do anything to help the flares, which is why i decided to paint. Here's a pic of an '06 off of ebay...flares definitely look darker than mine did when it rolled off the dealership lot. Don't know if its the picture, contrast against the white body or because my KJ sat on the lot most of the summer before i bought it.

TheJawsOfDeath, i read your linked thread after i replied the first time....i can tell you that if you plan to wheel, even lightly, the paint won't hold up. If you do find black bumpers or flares, please post the info. A black front bumper would really be nice.

At first I thought you meant the paint on the body of the Jeep! Worried me for a second. I wouldnt want my flares to have a bunch of paint flaking off so I probably wont do that. Is it bad to the point where rubbing up againt a bush or something would mess it up?

My buddys black Cherokee flares faded very noticably, but it took a few years. I went to the dealership today and it definately seems like the '07 sports had darker body molding. So did the inferno red '06 which was the only '06 on the lot...but I've also seen pictures of inferno red '06's that had flares that were the same shade as mine.

I backed into a pretty nasty bush and scratched the paint off one of the end caps of the rear bumper. Wet sand, tape up and a couple of coats later it looked like the day i first painted. Wouldn't be practical to do after every afternoon of wheelin tho.

Fender flares and back bumper still look pretty good after a year. I figure once a year i'm going to have to spend an afternoon redoing the front bumper. Still like to have the renegade fender flares, so i could remove and repaint easy if i had to.

i know there are a few guys out here who have done something like that. One guy even painted the roof with it. As long as the liner will stick to the plastic, it should last forever...
