I have an '06 with the 6 speed. I noticed something interesting today, which I think explains why the new 6 speed seems so well matched to the 3.7 liter...

1st gear @ 2000rpm = 10mph
2nd gear @ 2000rpm= 20mph
3rd gear @ 2000rpm = 30mph
4th gear @ 2000rpm = 40mph
5th gear @ 2000rpm = 50mph
6th gear @ 2000rpm = 60mph

If I were to choose any RPM in any gear to do a maximum torque pull, I'd probably be at 2000rpm. Coincidence? I think not. Who else has noticed this?

You need more challenge in your life. Anyone can drive an automatic...

Also if you take that 10mph in 1st and reduce it by 2.72, you get that torque at 3.6 mph!

hey jaws of death i noticed in you sig you have nv231 listed. i believe that case is only available on the auto liberty for 05-06. craw underneath your libby and see if the tag on you tansfer case is nv 241. the nv 241 comes with the manual 6 spped. if it is a nv 241 it is alot stronger. mike

and yes i have noticed what you were saying, i just wish when i'm going 75 mph the rpms would be a little lower. but i still manage 21 mpg on the highway.

Are you sure the 242 is stronger than the 231? :)

Idk if youve ever been in other cars, but the libertys rpms are fairly low compared to other cars. The 42rle is even lower than the 45rfe.

I think i run around 2500rpms at 80mph. 1800rpms at 60mph :)

Yeah, I'll have to do that. I was basing whats in my sig off what I found on the Jeep site.

Not to mention some nice passing power at 65 MPH w/o having to downshift. :D

Edit: This is a pretty cool site for speed/RPM calculations: http://www.car-videos.net/tools/speedrpm.asp

Yeah, I'll have to do that. I was basing whats in my sig off what I found on the Jeep site.

the nv 241 is a carry over from 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton rams with certain options, it has been around awhile in the dodge family. also found in the rubicon, the rubicons case is slightly modified for the 4:1 low range. jeep does not list it on there sight, but when you build on there sight it is listed as command track H.D., instead of plain old command track. when i took delivery of the k.j. i was shocked to see it since i was expecting a 231 case. corporate doesn't do a good job of educating sales people. because the sales dude was perplexed and it took him a week to get me an answer as to why it was on my rig.

but back to the topic i wouldn't trade this six speed for anything, smooth, quiet (as compared to the nv 3550 5 speed) and a blast to drive. plus i can get it into 6th just over 40mph with out bogging. not to mention two overdrives. i just hope it is durable for the long haul (i keep my cars for along time) mike

but does it change your towing capacity? (unofficially)

i don't think it does change the towing weight. the small clutch i believe is still the weak link, no matter what transfer case it has.

also i hope nobody confuses the nv 241(part time) with the nv 242 (full time). two different cases, with the nv 241 (part time) just being put in jeeps (wrangler, liberty) starting in 2005, with the 6 speed. and well the nv 242 (full time) we all know about has been around in the cherokee (and other jeeps) for almost 15 years.

Well guys I still havent slid under my Jeep to see exactly what Xfer case I have. What I know for sure is that this 6 speed is the nicest, slickest-shifting transmission Ive ever had the pleasure of driving. Simply awesome. Its going into libertys, nitros, dakotas, and a few other vehicles. I imagine DC did a good job on this one since this will the RWD 6SPD for 90% of their vehicles that get it.

yeah hopefully they will make the six speed for years to come. because right now parts are hard to come by with it being made by a german subcontractor of d.c. another 3-4years of production should be all it takes for a good aftermarket supplier to take interest in creating parts for it, especially since it is in the new and old wrangler. very nice gear box! love the low first gear!

just make sure when you do go to change the fluid in it, it takes syncromesh. or you can get it from the dealer. also the drain and fill plugs are 17 mm hex. mike

I crawled under my liberty and did see the NV241 tag on as well. It looks to be much beefier than the Nv231.
Not to mention that the NV241 takes 4.2 pints as opposed to the NV231 taking 2.2 pints (if my research is correct.)
Thats a whole quart more fluid...that has gotta be good...
