If I am thinking correctly, the ECU part number actually changes depending on the software flash. Can anybody confirm or deny that? In other words, I think an ECU with the F37 flash preloaded would be a different part number than the original ECU?

I think you are correct. Let me look into my library when I get to work and I will post some definitive info.

PM MrMopar64 ... he will be the one who knows...I do not think that flashes affect part numbers whatsoever. I think the ones for the 05-06 CRDs are the EDC16C2.x

According to the service info, the VIN is what is driving everything.

You have to get your VIN burned into any new ECU (or used)

Yes I know. That is why I said the VIN drives everything. Sorry for the confusion.

Each SW release delivered has a unique part number. I would be of the impression that that P/N as read by the StarScan would be different after the TSB flash since it's writing the entire SW over again. The purpose of the VIN is for security features such as the immobolizer and gets communicated between modules to verify that everybody is in the correct car, so yes it'll need to be re-entered in the ECU if a new one is installed.

As for the F37 update, no one I've talked to has any knowledge of new SW for the ECU, just for the TCM, so you might not find a new P/N for the F37 flash.

Also, all "new" modules are supplied by Bosch with the locked SW already loaded on them ready for installation in vehicles during plant builds. It's not uncommon to find vehicles being reflashed with new SW in-plant during end of line tests, so you might not find "new" modules with the latest updates on them already installed.
