With my stock Wrangler ST's, I fishtailed going through an intersection on the third day of ownership. I was travelling 10-15 mph in rainy weather. I blamed myself and figured it was because I was new to SUVs. Well, the wet traction just got worse despite my rotating the tires after every second oil changes. (They had plenty of tread when I took them off at 39,000 miles, so I don't think siping would have helped.) Offroading wasn't much of factor when choosing a new tire. I could have waited another 15K-20K miles, but knowing my wife was going to be driving the KJ more to take the kids to school, I wanted a safer, beefier tire. Now I have the best of both worlds: good road manners and respectable offroad capability.

At least you didnt do a 360.. I can thank the crappy Hp's and the powertrax locker for that.. 8)

I did a 180 on the ice last January pulling out of my subdivision onto a busy street with 50 mph speed limit. While turning to the right from a stop, the rear end broke free, and as I tried to regain control, the whole KJ started sliding sideways. Terrible feeling being in 4HI and having NO CONTROL WHATSOEVER. I thought I was going to end up dead in the retention pond across the street. When the tires caught traction on packed snow I was able to swing it around and rest at the side of the road, but facing backwards. That was the only true "oh sh*t," life-flashing-before-your-eyes moment in the KJ. I HATE ice.

You had the hockey puck, near death experience too. Try hanging on to a CRD when it lights-up and wants to spin in circles. Turbo lag works both ways, almost no chance to recover from a spin. I did find that a couple tubes of sand in the back end helps. Still drive in the rain in full-time 4X4. Can't get these junk tires off this rig quick enough.

Its just so hard for me to throw away tires with tread left though. It is funny I think I am putting off rotations just so they will wear out faster

You and me both.. I'm nearing the end of the line for my RS-A's and I can't wait to get a decent set of tires finally. No more squeeling around corners, better traction in the rain and a quieter ride! Now, I've just got to pick out the perfect tire...

I am probably going to put the Wrangler ST's on the van since it needs tires anyhow, and then get General Grabber AT2s 225-75 for the jeep. If everyone I have asked is right the 225-75 grabbers tread width is about 7.5 inches, which would make them wider than the 6.9 inches or so that most of the 245-70's (i think that is right) are. I was quoted something like $475 for a set of 5 from wal-mart.

Jeger, try here: http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=958&start=0

It shows the 245 as about an inch wider that the 225, and it's taller by a 1/4 of an inch too. http://www.net-comber.com/tirecalc.html

The section width is definantly wider on the 245's. For some reason the Grabbers seem to have a wider TREAD width than other 225's though. I havnt actually measured any myself but several on here have told me 7.5". I figure what is hitting the ground is what really counts.

A Grabber in 245 is wider than a Grabber in 225... I was figuring we were talking about it that way vs. a "Grabber vs Mud Rover" type of way.

Ok I see what you are saying, now you've got me wondering what the tread width is on the 245-70 grabbers  The only reason I didnt really consider the 245-70's before was because they are more expensive. You might have just cost me another 50 bucks on a set of tires

I concur with the group. It is the compound on the RSA/ST/HP that suck. I have bought several sets of the top rated GY Fortera HL's, Tripletreads based upon Consumers Report ratings and have found them to be excellent in wet and snow.

I have several sets of stockers and aftermarket tires for the KJ and it is not the edges/tread that is lacking... as said b4, it is the hardening of the rubber compound.

BTW, I crashed a KJ on the stockers on packed snow and the tires were new (less than 5000miles I recall)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v612/ ... ident7.jpg

I learned my lesson..

Cons Rep states that siping is not recommended as the benefit is marginal vs the cost.

The handling difference with the wider profile is worth every penny. The choppy handling & upper body sway in crosswinds is gone and your CRD won't look like the front tire are going flat.

It took some persuading at the tire dealer to get them to play along with the size change. Eventually had to tell them I prefered not to order them on-line, that was all it took.

RFCRD, do you get any rubbing with those wider tires on there? I too want to ditch my stock tires, but I don't have a lift or anything so I want to know if these will fit on mine. Also, how much +/- did it affect your speedo?

You can run 245 70 16s with no problem stock, speedometer will not be off that much that you can really tell it and the ride / control will be so much better, I have the Firestone destinations ATs and they do a good job

The '245' is the width of the tread in mm.

So a 225 tire has a tread width of 225mm and a 245/70 has a tread width of 245mm. 245/75 has a tread width of 245mm, etc. :)
